TANA Foundation Free Eye Screening Camp at ZPHS Movva
On July 15th TANA Foundation, in association with Vuyyuru Rotary Hospital, conducted an eye screening camp at Movva Zila Parishad High School. This event was coordinated and sponsored by Prepare, a nonprofit that provides quality STEM and health education for several government schools in rural India including ZPHS Movva. With the support of school staff and the Prepare team, every student received a free eye exam. Those with vision impairment or other eye problems received prescription eyeglasses and eyedrops for free.
Of the 600+ students screened, 86% of them had never received an eye exam before. The two main causes for this, as identified by a student survey, were not knowing where to get an eye exam and believing that there is no need for an eye exam unless one experiences noticeable vision impairment. These factors contribute to and exemplify the lack of awareness regarding preventative healthcare measures among rural populations. Prepare is addressing this issue by creating a health education curriculum to be taught at these schools.
The Movva eye camp is the first of five eye camps to be hosted for government schools in Prepare’s STEM program. The following eye camps will be held at ZPHS Tapasipudi, SRYSP Challapalli, ZPHS Bhatlapenammaru, and ZPHS Mopidevi schools. Prepare is grateful to TANA Foundation and Vuyyuru Rotary Hospital for making these camps possible and improving the lives of hundreds of government school students.
Special thanks to Soenka Gorrepati (Daughter of Chandu Gorrepati garu) for coordinating the efforts from India.
