Delhi to Become a Pollution-Free City by 2030… Government Announces Roadmap
Pollution is increasing drastically in the national capital, Delhi. Governments have been trying to control this for a long time. During the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) tenure, even-odd numbered vehicles were allowed on alternate days in Delhi. However, pollution did not decrease.
Consequently, the current BJP government has taken a crucial decision. It has resolved to transform Delhi into a pollution-free city by 2030. As part of this initiative, the government has announced massive tax exemptions and incentives to encourage people to buy electric vehicles (EVs). Additionally, the registration of electric autos will not be permitted after January 2027, and petrol and CNG vehicles will no longer be allowed for registration starting April 2028. The Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, took this decision. As part of the new policy, the government is waiving the lifetime tax and registration charges on electric vehicles priced below ₹30 lakhs starting July 1st.
Key Highlights of the Roadmap:
By 2030, 30% of all school buses will be converted into electric vehicles.
30,000 EV charging points will be set up. The government will spend ₹7,000 crores over the next four years to develop EV infrastructure.
Those who purchase an electric two-wheeler in the first year of the policy’s implementation will receive an incentive of ₹30,000. This incentive will be ₹20,000 in the second year and ₹10,000 in the third year.
An incentive of ₹1,000,000 (1 Lakh) will be provided to those who come forward to scrap their BS-4 vehicles.
Starting January 1, 2027, registrations will be granted exclusively to electric autos. Petrol and CNG vehicles will not be allowed.
