Where Was Supreme Leader Khamenei’s Body Kept For So Many Days?
Due to the ongoing tense war conditions with the United States and Israel, the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was postponed for over four months. The 86-year-old passed away on February 28 following a joint airstrike by the US and Israel on his residential complex in Tehran.
However, the question remains: where was his body preserved for all these days? To adhere to legal and religious guidelines, his body was kept in a refrigerated cold storage forensic mortuary. According to Islamic tradition, a body must usually be buried within 24 hours. Nevertheless, due to critical conditions and constraints, his funeral was delayed.
Immediately after his death, the US and Israel launched heavy air and missile strikes on Tehran and other Iranian cities. Due to the threat of continuous airstrikes, mobilizing millions of citizens and hosting foreign dignitaries became impossible and extremely dangerous.
However, the situation changed slightly after an agreement was reached between Iran and the US in June. Against this backdrop, a stable environment has now emerged. Still, public events remained risky due to ongoing security threats and targeted attacks. For instance, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei (son of Ali Khamenei), decided not to attend his father’s funeral fully due to active Israeli surveillance risks and threats of assassination against him.
Officials were also determined to avoid a repeat of the deadly stampedes that occurred during Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s funeral in 1989 and Qasem Soleimani’s funeral in 2020. They decided to conduct the funeral only after conditions became completely favorable.
So, where was the body kept?
Since chemical embalming is prohibited in Islam, authorities relied entirely on temperature control to preserve the Supreme Leader’s body. Experts and officials stated that the body was stored in a cryogenic/ultra-cold room within a forensic mortuary.
Under extraordinary circumstances, preserving a body in a cold state to delay burial is permissible. This allowed the government to easily obtain a religious exemption.
Kept alongside deceased family members: Khamenei’s body was preserved right next to some of his family members who also lost their lives in the same airstrikes in February.
