US Swades 2026 Parade in San Jose Draws 25,000+ for India’s Independence Day
August 2026 More than 25,000 people came together in Downtown San Jose on August 15 for AIA SWADES 2026, a spectacular celebration of India’s 80th Independence Day featuring a historic India Day Parade, more than 80 floats and marching groups, participation from 50+ Indian-American organizations.
Organized by the Association of Indo Americans (AIA), SWADES brought together families, community organizations, cultural groups, elected officials, business leaders and thousands of Indian-American community members for a day-long celebration of India’s rich diversity, heritage and the enduring friendship between India and the United States.

A Historic Parade Showcasing India’s Diversity:
The Historic San Jose India Day Parade transformed Downtown San Jose into a vibrant celebration of Indian culture and community pride.
More than 80 floats and marching groups representing different Indian states, cultures, traditions and community organizations participated in the parade. The celebration featured the spectacular 80-foot India & USA Flag Walk, the Tiranga Walk, music, cultural performances and community participation from across the Bay Area.
The parade provided a unique opportunity for Indian-American communities from across the region to come together and showcase the extraordinary diversity of India while celebrating their shared connection to their adopted home in the United States.
Grand Marshal Taapsee Pannu Leads the Celebration:
The celebration was led by acclaimed Indian actress Taapsee Pannu, who served as the Grand Marshal of SWADES 2026.
Known for her powerful and thought-provoking performances, Taapsee has portrayed memorable characters and stories centered on women’s empowerment, humanity, social issues and meaningful messages.
Her presence brought an additional level of excitement to the celebration, with thousands of community members lining the parade route to welcome and cheer for the Grand Marshal.

India and the United States Celebrating Together:
The SWADES celebration also highlighted the strong relationship between the Indian-American community and the United States.
The flag-hoisting ceremony and festivities were attended by prominent dignitaries including Consul General of India Dr. Srikar Reddy, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, the US Congressmember Sam Liccardo, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen and California Assembly members Ash Kalra and Patrick Ahrens along with more than 40 + elected officials representing communities across Silicon Valley. Celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day and the United States’ 250th Independence Day at the AIA SWADES 2026 Parade in Historic Downtown San Jose.
The participation of elected leaders, community organizations and families underscored the growing importance of Indian-American culture and community life in the Bay Area.
Celebrating the Next Generation:
SWADES also placed a strong emphasis on youth and cultural preservation.
More than 100 children participated in classical and film dance performances, while community activities including Art, chess and essay competitions provided opportunities for children and families to participate beyond the parade.
These programs reflect AIA’s commitment to connecting the next generation with India’s culture, traditions and heritage.

Day & Night Mela Brings the Celebration to Life:
The celebration continued beyond the parade with a free Day & Night Mela, featuring Indian food, shopping, cultural entertainment, family activities and live performances.
The evening program featured Vijay Bharat, a grand cultural showcase featuring dances representing India’s diverse states and traditions, bringing together music, dance and entertainment for the thousands who remained throughout the evening.
The festivities continued into the evening, creating a full-day celebration of Indian culture and community in the heart of San Jose.
