Printed Books Outshine E-Books in Global Popularity
On the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, new data highlights that the traditional charm of ink on paper continues to dominate the reading landscape. Despite the digital revolution of the 21st century, e-books have yet to surpass the popularity of printed volumes in most major markets.
According to Statista’s Market Insights, the penetration of e-books significantly trails that of physical books globally. In the United States, for instance, approximately 30 percent of the population purchased a printed book last year, while only 21 percent opted for an e-book. Out of the ten major countries analyzed, China stands as the sole exception to this trend; there, e-books lead the way with a 27 percent purchase rate compared to 24 percent for printed copies.
Statista analysts suggest that the rise of digital reading does not signal the end of the traditional publishing era. Instead, e-books are evolving as a complementary product. This dual-format market is expected to bolster the publishing industry as a whole, offering readers more ways to engage with content rather than replacing the physical reading experience entirely.
