Why Gold Loans Are Becoming a Bigger Part of India’s Lending Story
Gold loans are rapidly emerging as a cornerstone of India’s formal lending ecosystem, driven by surging liquidity demands and the high volume of household gold, particularly across South India.
Borrowers increasingly rely on secured credit for timely access to funds without traditional collateral hurdles. This momentum is further amplified by rising gold prices, which have significantly increased the collateral value available to customers.
Strategic expansion by Godrej Finance
Financial institutions are aggressively scaling up their portfolios to capture this demand. Pankaj Gupta, MD and CEO of Godrej Finance, stated that building on their strong foundation in MSME lending and disciplined risk management, gold loans will serve as a key pillar of their consumer finance strategy.
The company aims to grow its gold loan business 2X in two years and 4X over five years. This expansion is designed to contribute ₹1,200 crore toward building a ₹3,500 crore gold loan franchise across South India.
Market outlook and accessibility
For lenders like Godrej Finance, the South represents a vital growth market across both established and emerging regions. By combining local market understanding, wider distribution networks, and technology-led processes, institutions are making formal gold-backed credit far more accessible, turning a traditional household asset into a vital driver of modern financial inclusion.
