Vedanta Power Reaffirms Commitment to India’s Energy Security on Independence Day
As India marked its 80th Independence Day, Vedanta Power Limited the nation’s fifth-largest private thermal power producer—reiterated its steadfast dedication to bolstering the country’s energy security. The company highlighted its ongoing efforts to deliver dependable electricity, secure domestic fuel channels, and drive long-term capacity expansion across key states.
Operational Footprint and Fuel Security:
Boasting a total power generation footprint of 4.78 GW, Vedanta Power encompasses 4.18 GW of fully operational capacity alongside 0.6 GW currently in the commissioning phase. The firm maintains a strong operational presence spanning Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. Approximately 74% of its total capacity is secured through reliable long- and medium-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), while about 85% of its operational portfolio benefits directly from domestic coal linkages, ensuring robust fuel security and operational stability.
Fuel security serves as a cornerstone of Vedanta Power’s generation strategy. Around 85% of its active portfolio relies on long-term domestic coal arrangements facilitated via Coal India subsidiaries, namely Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), and Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL). Notably, this framework includes 100% linkage coal from SECL and NCL dedicated to the Vedanta Power Talwandi Sabo Thermal Plant in Punjab, as well as 100% linkage coal from MCL supporting the Vedanta Power Jharsuguda Thermal Plant in Odisha.
Enhancing Fuel Flexibility:
Furthermore, the company is actively enhancing fuel flexibility across its assets. At Meenakshi Energy Limited in Andhra Pradesh, operations are shifting away from an initial reliance on imported coal toward increased domestic coal utilization. This strategic transition is designed to maximize fuel security while insulating operations from global market volatility.
Leadership Perspectives on Independence and Growth:
Sharing his perspective on the occasion, Rajinder Singh Ahuja, Whole-Time Director and CEO of Vedanta Power Limited, remarked, “Energy security is fundamental to the country’s economic independence and its aspirations for a developed India. At Vedanta Power, we are committed to playing our part by ensuring reliable and secure power, strengthening domestic fuel linkages and expanding our generation capacity. As India’s power requirements continue to grow, we believe dependable thermal power will remain an important part of the energy mix, alongside emerging clean energy technologies. Our focus is to build a resilient and diversified power portfolio that can support India’s growth ambitions for decades to come and contribute towards Viksit Bharat by 2047.”
Echoing this sentiment, K Binu Raphael, Acting CEO of Meenakshi Energy Limited, added, “Independence is also about building greater resilience and reducing dependence on external resources. At Meenakshi Energy Limited, our transition towards greater use of domestic coal reflects this larger national objective. By progressively increasing domestic coal utilisation, we are strengthening fuel security and building a more resilient power generation operations.”
Future Expansion and Strategic Diversification:
Looking toward the future, Vedanta Power has charted an ambitious roadmap to scale its generation capacity to 12 GW by FY33, with the ultimate vision of securing a position among India’s top three private thermal power producers. While conventional thermal generation will remain vital for satisfying escalating baseload and round-the-clock electricity demands, the enterprise is also exploring ventures in nuclear power, hydropower, and advanced battery storage systems as part of a comprehensive diversification plan. Management emphasizes that India’s ongoing energy transition necessitates a balanced mix bridging reliable conventional assets with flexible, clean-energy solutions. Specifically, nuclear power holds immense potential to supply stable, 24×7 electricity while accelerating the nation’s shift toward a lower-carbon framework.
As India surges forward into a more energy-intensive economic era, Vedanta Power remains firmly anchored to its mission: reinforcing the bedrock of national energy security through consistent generation, domestic fuel independence, and sustained capital investment in critical power infrastructure.
