Hyderabad: Honourable Chief Minister Shri A Revanth Reddy ordered the officials to make permanent, high quality arrangements for the ensuing 2026 Khelo India Games scheduled to be held from December 11 to 22 in the Telangana State.
CM Revanth Reddy held a review of the preparations for the 8th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games at the MCRHRD Institute on Monday. Ministers Jupally Krishna Rao and Vakiti Srihari, along with Sports Authority Chairman Shivsena Reddy, participated in the meeting.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the arrangements for this prestigious event should be made with the highest quality standards without any lapses. The CM explained to the officials that the government was considering the big sports event as highly prestigious in view of the new Telangana Sports Policy and the establishment of the ‘Young India Physical Education and Sports University’—to transform Telangana into a national sports hub. The big event is a significant opportunity to provide young athletes in Telangana with international standard infrastructure and world-class training, with the long-term goal of winning medals at the Olympics.
CM Revanth Reddy directed that arrangements for the ‘Khelo India’ games be made in parallel with those for the ‘Invest Telangana Global Summit,’ ensuring that resources prepared for the summit are also utilized for the sports event. All the officials should also work in coordination to attract investments in sports and sports development during the ‘Invest Telangana Global Summit.
The Chief Minister underscored the need to establish permanent infrastructure aimed at identifying the sporting talent among the youth and grooming them into international-standard athletes. The CM also stressed that sports facilities must be developed to the highest quality standards so that the available infrastructure continues to serve as valuable sporting assets after the ‘Khelo India’ games.
To ensure strict adherence to quality standards, the Chief Minister instructed that Group-1 level officers be assigned to supervise the works from the beginning to the end of the games. Trainee officers and Group-1 officials stationed in various districts will be appointed to oversee the arrangements for the competitions taking place in those respective locations. Food and accommodation to the athletes and weekly progress report on the preparations were discussed in the meeting.
Furthermore, CM Revanth Reddy instructed to take robust, foolproof measures to prevent any of the issues that occurred during sports events under the previous BRS administration. The officials brought to the notice of the CM that sports infrastructure developed in certain locations during the previous government perished just a few years after the sporting events concluded.
In light of El Niño conditions, the Chief Minister advised that care be taken to avoid unnecessary extravagance during the opening and closing ceremonies of the sporting events. Thousands of young athletes from across the country are set to participate in the ‘Khelo India’ games. In addition to over 7,000 young athletes, approximately 2,000 coaching staff and officials are expected to attend the state.
Twenty-seven different sporting disciplines, along with one demonstration event, will be held across 20 venues in six cities, including Hyderabad. The Chief Minister directed that immediate action be taken to include ‘Karrasamu’ ( traditional Telangana martial art) in the Khelo India games under the host state’s quota.
Officials said that measures are being taken to ensure that athletes representing Telangana in the games perform to the best of their ability. Athletes are already undergoing training at various ‘Khelo India’ camps across different districts. Officials also provided an update on the progress of infrastructure development work currently underway at the 20 venues designated for the various sporting events.
Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, Advisor to the Chief Minister K. Ramakrishna Rao, Special Chief Secretary (Sports) Vani Prasad, Sports Authority Managing Director Sonibala Devi, and other senior officials were also present.
