Global University Foundation Partners with SBI Japan for Healthcare Research; Backed by $250M Commitment
Global University Foundation (GUF), branded as the Global Institute for Research and Innovation (GIRI) and led by Founder and Chairman Dr. Ravindranath Kancherla, has signed a Research Collaboration Agreement with The Systems Biology Institute (SBI), Japan. Announced during a visit to Hyderabad by SBI President Dr. Hiroaki Kitano on November 1, 2026, the strategic partnership supports GUF’s objective to establish an integrated university and healthcare research ecosystem in Hyderabad. The overarching vision for Global University Foundation is backed by a financial commitment of US$250 million pledged by Dr. Kancherla along with key global leaders and collaborators.
Frontier Research Focus Areas:
Initiated in August 2025, the research collaboration has entered its second phase, focusing on three advanced biomedical domain areas:
Computational Oncology: Utilizing epigenomic biological clocks to track cancer progression, discover biomarkers for early detection, and construct disease models tailored to Indian patient demographics.
Healthy Ageing: Expanding on published research regarding personalized digital cognitive stimulation for dementia patients to develop AI-driven cognitive care solutions for older adults.
Multi-Omics and Longevity: Creating unified biological age metrics and developing personalized “digital twins” to guide preventive healthcare interventions.
Academic Engagement and Global Network:
SBI Japan will assist GUF in defining research priorities, driving peer-reviewed publications, formulating academic curricula, and facilitating visiting faculty exchanges. Furthermore, SBI’s international network spanning institutions such as the University of British Columbia, Mila Quebec AI Institute, Institut Curie, Osaka University, OIST, and the University of Melbourne will explore joint research, academic exchanges, and grant proposals with GUF. The core scientific team is led by Dr. Ravindranath Kancherla and Dr. Hiroaki Kitano alongside SBI Senior Researchers Dr. Ayako Yachie, Dr. Sucheendra K. Palaniappan, and Dr. Samik Ghosh working with the GIRI team.
Leadership Perspectives:
Dr. Ravindranath Kancherla, Founder and Chairman of Global University Foundation, stated that India presents a distinctive opportunity to advance research across healthcare, life sciences, and technology, given the diversity of its patient populations and the scale of its healthcare needs. He emphasized that GUF aims to integrate world-class scientific expertise and technological innovation with India’s clinical realities to build interdisciplinary capabilities that translate discoveries into meaningful healthcare outcomes. Dr. Hiroaki Kitano, President of The Systems Biology Institute, noted that complex health challenges like cancer and cognitive decline require understanding the interaction of multiple biological systems, highlighting that this collaboration creates a key opportunity to advance clinically significant research while strengthening scientific capabilities in India.
