Telugu Student Prasanna Atluri Dies in Tragic Road Accident in New York
NEW YORK — In a heartbreaking incident, a 25-year-old Indian student from Andhra Pradesh, identified as Prasanna Atluri, lost her life in a tragic multi-vehicle collision in upstate New York. The accident occurred during the early hours of July 5, 2026.
Prasanna was a resident of Mulapadu village in the Ibrahimpatnam Mandal of the NTR district, Andhra Pradesh. Having recently graduated from Pace University in New York, she was actively pursuing employment opportunities when the tragedy struck, leaving her family and the Telugu diaspora in deep mourning.
Contradictory Traffic Accounts Under Investigation
According to the initial accident report released by the New York State Police, the vehicle in which Prasanna was traveling as a passenger failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of State Routes 224 and 13 in the town of Cayuta. As the car entered the intersection, it was broadsided by an oncoming vehicle operating under a green signal, driven by a local resident identified as Bryan J. Woodworth.
Prasanna, who was seated in the rear passenger seat, sustained fatal injuries from the impact and was pronounced dead at Robert Packer Hospital. The driver and two other occupants of her vehicle sustained injuries and were hospitalized for medical treatment.
However, a conflicting account has emerged from Prasanna’s family members. In a GoFundMe donation campaign launched by her relative, Ravi Kumar, to help manage emergency expenses and repatriation, the family stated that it was actually the oncoming vehicle that ran the red light, causing the fatal crash. Local law enforcement authorities are currently conducting a detailed forensic investigation into the intersection’s traffic logs to ascertain the definitive sequence of events.
Efforts Underway for Repatriation
The unexpected demise of the young graduate has devastated her family in Andhra Pradesh, who were anticipating her return or professional settlement. Representatives from local Telugu community organizations in the United States are currently coordinating with consular officials and the family to expedite the legal formalities and arrange for the repatriation of Prasanna’s mortal remains to her native village of Mulapadu for final rites.
