Tata AIG Urges EV Owners to Review Motor Insurance as India’s Electric Vehicle Registrations Surge 51.9%
Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited (Tata AIG) has urged India’s growing base of electric vehicle (EV) owners to review their motor insurance policies, responding to rapid expansion in the domestic EV sector. According to official Vahan registration data, India registered 25.37 lakh EVs between January and September 2026, marking a 51.9% surge from 16.70 lakh units registered during the same period in 2025. In just nine months, 2026 registration totals have exceeded the 23,56,971 EVs recorded across all twelve months of 2025, demonstrating accelerated adoption following growth rates of 28.0% in 2024 and 16.3% in 2025.
EVs represented 10.7% of all new vehicle registrations during this nine-month period, up from 8.6% a year earlier. September recorded the year’s highest monthly volume at 3,37,240 EV registrations, reflecting a 76.1% year-on-year increase. Projections suggest that total registrations for 2026 could reach approximately 33.8 lakh units once figures for the final festive quarter are compiled.
Evolving Insurance Needs and Specialized Coverage:
The transition to electric mobility introduces distinct operational and structural risks that differ from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. EV risks center on high-value battery replacement costs, specialized technical repair requirements, and potential electrical surge incidents during charging. Tata AIG emphasizes that EV owners should evaluate whether their motor insurance coverage provides adequate financial protection against these specific exposures.
Key insurance considerations and optional add-on protections highlighted by Tata AIG include:
Battery and Component Damage: Ensuring explicit coverage for the vehicle’s battery pack—its most valuable component—against physical and electrical damage.
Charging Infrastructure: Evaluating protection for wall box chargers, portable charging cables, charging guns, and associated accessories against electrical surges or accidental damage.
Specialized Add-ons: Reviewing policy add-ons such as Electric Surge Secure cover, battery convenience cover, and wall charger protection cover.
Policy Terms: Understanding applicable deductibles, policy exclusions, and specific claim conditions before finalizing coverage.
Leadership Perspective and Commercial Fleet Impact:
A Kiran Kumar, Head – Motor Underwriting, Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited, stated: “India’s EV story has moved from early adoption to the mainstream, and that changes how vehicle owners need to think about protection. An electric vehicle carries a different risk profile from a conventional one. The battery is its most valuable component, repairs often call for specialised expertise, and charging brings a new set of exposures at home and on the road.”
In addition to personal passenger vehicles, the steady adoption of electric three-wheelers and commercial EV fleets has brought fleet risk management into focus. For commercial operators, insurance evaluations extend beyond direct vehicle damage to encompass operational continuity, repair-related downtime, and comprehensive fleet-level risk mitigations under applicable policy terms.
