India’s Chocolate Trends Insights from Instamart’s World Chocolate Day Report
Ahead of World Chocolate Day on July 7, Instamart released an analysis of consumer order patterns between July 2025 and June 2026, revealing that chocolate is increasingly becoming a staple in everyday grocery baskets rather than just a product for gifting. While consumers are experimenting with new trends, classic milk chocolate remains the country’s favorite, with 4 out of every 10 chocolates ordered falling into this category. Chocolate-coated wafer bars also remain highly popular, accounting for 2 out of every 10 orders.
Top Trends and Growth Drivers:
Viral Trends: The fastest-growing trend was the “Dubai chocolate,” with orders for the viral pistachio-filled bars jumping by 11,739%.
Conscious Indulgence: India is moving toward more conscious consumption, evidenced by an 85% growth in sugar-free chocolate orders and a 50% rise in dark chocolate demand. Protein chocolates are also emerging as a fast-growing segment.
Premiumization: 1 in every 5 chocolates ordered is now either premium or functional. This trend is spreading beyond metros, with cities like Surat, Vadodara, Kolhapur, and Siliguri emerging as hotspots for premium chocolate.
India’s “Chocolate Capitals” and Consumer Behavior:
Bengaluru: Recognized as India’s milk chocolate capital, it orders nearly 2X more chocolate than the average metro. Additionally, it accounts for nearly a quarter of all sugar-free and protein chocolate orders.
Mumbai: Leads the country in the preference for premium chocolates and follows Bengaluru closely in sugar-free and protein chocolate orders.
Other Preferences: Hyderabad leads in caramel cravings, while Kochi and Kolkata are building a taste for hazelnut and white chocolate.
Extreme Enthusiasts: The data highlighted remarkable individual consumption habits, including one user in Kochi who placed 277 orders in a year and one chocoholic in Ahmedabad who spent ₹1.59 lakh on chocolates annually.
Chocolate as an Everyday Essential:
Chocolate consumption is no longer limited to celebrations. On Valentine’s Day, orders surged by 74%, peaking at 745 chocolates per minute at 11:25 AM. Consumers now frequently pair chocolates with diverse daily essentials, ranging from popcorn and ice cream to instant noodles, bananas, and protein shakes, cementing its place in daily life.
