India Eats 4 Lakh Rotis on Trains as Swiggy’s Rail Food Orders Triple in Q1 FY27
Food delivery giant Swiggy’s specialized ‘Food on Train’ delivery service is rapidly shaping up to be the company’s next big growth engine. Having aggressively expanded the service to over 180 cities, Swiggy recorded a staggering threefold surge in train-based food orders during the first quarter of the current fiscal year (April–June) compared to the same period last year.
Interestingly, this massive surge isn’t just restricted to primary metropolitan transit hubs; a significant chunk of the burgeoning demand is originating from tier-2 and tier-3 railway stations. The company revealed an encouraging consumer acquisition metric, noting that in several smaller towns, up to 66% of the train orders were placed by entirely first-time users on the Swiggy platform.
Multi-Station Bookings and New Tech Features Fuel Growth
A prominent behavioral shift among rail passengers is the explosive rise of multi-station bookings, where travelers order different meals at two or more distinct stops along their route using a single PNR number. The company reported a phenomenal 300% year-on-year increase in multi-station bookings. Data shows that these multi-station passengers are highly lucrative, spending an average of 2.2 times more than standard single-order customers.
To capitalize on this momentum, Swiggy executed a series of strategic expansions and technical upgrades:
Network Expansion: During the peak summer travel season, the service was rolled out across 17 new high-traffic railway stations, including Gurgaon, Udaipur, Bikaner, Nizamabad, and Tadipatri.
Automated PNR Integration: Swiggy introduced a smart in-app feature that allows users to simply scan their physical or digital train tickets, enabling the platform’s algorithm to automatically detect the PNR status and map out available restaurant partners along the journey itinerary.
Students Lead the Demand With Comfort Food Favorites
The student demographic has emerged as a major catalyst for this segment’s rapid volume growth. Swiggy observed a sharp 70% spike in student-led train orders during the final week of May, directly aligning with the seasonal reopening of colleges and universities across the country.
When it comes to the culinary choices of Indian rail passengers, traditional comfort food remains undefeated. Simple rotis secured the absolute top position as the most ordered item on tracks, closely followed by perennial favorites such as chicken biryani, masala dosa, aloo paratha, and aloo tikki burgers.
