Coke Studio Bharat Reimagines a Forgotten War Story Through a Wife’s Eyes in ‘Kachaudi Gali’
National: Coke Studio Bharat has returned with its third release of Season 4, traveling this time to the historic lanes of Benaras for ‘Kachaudi Gali’a poignant folk track inspired by the forgotten human cost of the First Anglo-Burmese War.
The song opens in Kachaudi Gali, capturing the heartbreaking moment a woman watches her husband get marched away by the British Army. Recruited from Mirzapur and shipped off to Rangoon (Yangon, Myanmar) to fight a war he never chose, her voice carries a potent blend of grief, fury, and the sudden emptiness of her home. It highlights an intimate, localized trauma that never made it into mainstream history textbooks, but has lived quietly for generations within the narrow lanes of cities like Benaras.
A Trio of Distinct Musical Voices:
Bringing this oral history to life are three distinct artists who balance the track’s heavy emotional weight with contemporary production:
Rekha Bhardwaj: Anchors the track with her signature emotional authority, carrying the weight of longing and defiance in equal measure.
Utpal Udit: Infuses a grounded folk sensibility into the track, maintaining its raw texture without softening its historical edges.
Khwaab: Weaves through the melody as a thread of quiet tension, allowing the inherent grief of the narrative to breathe.
Reviving Overlooked Regional Narratives:
“One of the most exciting things about folk music is that it carries memory in a very natural way,” says Shantanu Gangane, IMX (Integrated Marketing Experience) Lead, Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia. “Bhojpuri has a rich tradition of storytelling that, over time, has slowly faded from the mainstream. With Coke Studio Bharat, the endeavor has been to bring these lost stories and cultures back into the conversation.”
Reflecting on the track’s intimate nature, Rekha Bhardwaj shared, “‘Kachaudi Gali’ sits in a very specific emotional space. It’s not about the war, it’s about what the war takes from you. Even with the scale of the platform, the song still feels deeply personal.”
Utpal Udit emphasized the importance of staying honest to traditional Bhojpuri folk elements through deliberate pauses and sonic restraint, while Khwaab noted that the platform succeeds by giving a global stage to deeply localized dialects and overlooked historical events.
Following the successful releases of Ae Ajnabee and Bulleya Ve, Kachaudi Gali continues Coke Studio Bharat Season 4’s mission of reinterpreting regional oral traditions through modern collaborative sounds.
