Amazon Prime Day Suggests India’s Premiumisation Story is Moving Beyond Metros
E-commerce giant Amazon has revealed a significant shift in consumer purchasing behavior across the country. According to the company’s insights from its recently concluded Prime Day sale, a growing number of shoppers are showing a strong preference for premium products. The trend of purchasing high-end items, once heavily concentrated in metropolitan areas, is now experiencing rapid growth in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
Sharing data from the sale event, Amazon noted that the demand for premium beauty products surged by three times compared to the previous year. Similarly, grooming products priced above ₹2,500 saw their sales double, while the purchase of premium televisions priced over ₹35,000 also witnessed a twofold increase. In the home entertainment segment, customers specifically showed a heightened interest in large-screen TVs measuring 65 inches and above.
Small Towns Drive High-End Motorcycle and Tech Sales
One of the most striking trends was observed in the premium automotive category. Sales of high-end motorcycles priced above ₹1.5 lakh—featuring iconic brands like Harley-Davidson, KTM, Triumph, and Royal Enfield—jumped by 2.3 times. Remarkably, nearly 70% of the consumers who purchased these premium motorcycles hailed from smaller cities and towns, underlining the expanding purchasing power outside urban centers.
Beyond vehicles and large screens, Amazon stated that consumers displayed a robust appetite for several other high-end and technologically advanced categories. The platform recorded high demand for:
– International kitchen appliance brands
– Premium travel luggage
– AI-powered laptops
– Robotic vacuum cleaners
– Premium coffee machines and smart water purifiers
