Elon Musk’s children often have names that attract attention around the world. Some of their names are so unusual that people may not even know how to pronounce them. But one of his children has a name that sounds surprisingly familiar to Indians: Strider Sekhar.
Yes, Elon Musk, one of the world’s most famous tech billionaires, chose “Sekhar” as part of his son’s name. But the interesting part is that the name does not come from an Indian friend or a family member. It comes from a man who changed the way the world understands the life and death of stars.
That man was the great Indian-origin scientist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.
Strider on One Side… Sekhar on the Other
Musk himself explained the inspiration behind his son’s name. Strider comes from Aragorn, the famous character from The Lord of the Rings. But the second part of the name, Sekhar, was inspired by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, whom Musk described as a “great Indian physicist.”
So, that explains how the name “Sekhar” became part of Elon Musk’s son’s name. But it also raises another question. What exactly did Chandrasekhar do, and why is he remembered as one of the great scientists of the modern era?
What Did Chandrasekhar Discover?
Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born in 1910 in Lahore, which was then part of British India. Today, Lahore is in Pakistan. However, he grew up and studied mainly in Madras, now known as Chennai. From a young age, he showed a deep interest in mathematics and physics.
There is another interesting connection in his family. C.V. Raman, India’s first Nobel Prize winner in science, was related to Chandrasekhar. But Chandrasekhar did not build his reputation because of his famous family. He created his own place in the world of science.
And the subject that fascinated him the most was something people see almost every night: the stars.
Do Stars Also Die?
When we look at the night sky, stars seem permanent. They appear to have been there forever and will probably remain there forever. But the reality is very different. Stars also have a life cycle. They are born, they grow, they burn their fuel and, eventually, they reach the end of their lives.
This led Chandrasekhar to one of the most important questions of his career: What happens when a star dies?
It may sound like a simple question, but finding the answer was anything but simple. Chandrasekhar was still a young scientist when he began studying the final stages of stars. His calculations and research eventually led to one of the most important ideas in modern astronomy.
That idea became known as the Chandrasekhar Limit.
What Is the Chandrasekhar Limit?
In simple terms, the future of a dying star depends largely on its mass. Some stars shrink at the end of their lives and become what scientists call a White Dwarf. But Chandrasekhar discovered that a star above a certain mass cannot remain stable as a White Dwarf.
So, what happens to such a star? It can collapse further. Depending on its mass and other physical conditions, it may eventually become a Neutron Star or collapse further through processes associated with the formation of a Black Hole.
The maximum mass at which a dying star can remain stable as a White Dwarf became known as the Chandrasekhar Limit.
This was not a small discovery. Chandrasekhar’s work became an important foundation for understanding how stars evolve, how they die and what can happen to massive stars at the end of their lives.
But Nobody Believed Him at First
This is where Chandrasekhar’s story becomes even more interesting. He was a young scientist presenting his research before some of the biggest names in science. But instead of receiving immediate acceptance, he faced strong opposition.
Some leading scientists of that time did not agree with his theory. Imagine being a young researcher and hearing famous experts question your work. Many people might have lost confidence and given up.
Chandrasekhar did not.
He trusted his calculations and continued his research. As time passed, scientists began to understand the importance of his work. Eventually, the scientific world accepted that his ideas were correct, and the theory that was once questioned became one of the most important concepts in astrophysics.
His Work Was Not Limited to Stars
The Chandrasekhar Limit made him famous, but that was only one chapter of his scientific journey. Chandrasekhar had a habit of moving from one difficult scientific problem to another. Once he had studied a subject deeply, he often looked for a new challenge.
His work covered the structure and evolution of stars, the movement of stars, the behaviour of light, fluid dynamics, the theory of relativity and even Black Holes.
In other words, Chandrasekhar was not a scientist who spent his entire life studying just one topic. He kept choosing some of the most difficult questions about the universe and trying to find answers to them.
Finally, the Nobel Prize
The biggest recognition of Chandrasekhar’s work came in 1983, when he received the Nobel Prize in Physics. The award recognised his theoretical studies of the structure and evolution of stars.
The Nobel Prize was the result of decades of research and scientific work. For Chandrasekhar, it was also a powerful reminder that ideas which were once questioned could eventually change the way the world understands the universe.
His Name Reached Space Too
Chandrasekhar’s influence did not end with the Nobel Prize. NASA later named its famous Chandra X-ray Observatory after him. The observatory studies some of the most extreme objects and events in the universe, including Black Holes, exploding stars and other powerful cosmic phenomena.
There is something fitting about that. Chandrasekhar spent his life trying to understand the stars and the universe. Today, a space observatory carrying his name continues to study that same universe.
And That Is Why Elon Musk’s Son Has the Name ‘Sekhar’
Now, let’s return to where this story began. Elon Musk’s son is named Strider Sekhar. Strider comes from a fictional character, but Sekhar comes from a real person whose work changed modern astrophysics.
That person was Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar—a scientist who asked what happens when stars die, developed ideas that were initially challenged, continued his research despite opposition and eventually won the Nobel Prize.
