AAP’s Victory in Local Body Elections Gives the Party a Much-Needed Breather
With exactly one year left for the state assembly elections, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab has been facing a challenging period. However, amidst these tough times, the party has found some reassurance. AAP secured a resounding victory in the Hoshiarpur and Jalalabad municipal elections, allowing the party to breathe a sigh of relief and boosting the self-confidence of its cadre.
The Election Outcomes
Hoshiarpur Municipal Election: Out of a total of 50 seats, AAP won a whopping 35 seats. Meanwhile, the Congress managed to win 9 seats, and the BJP secured just 3 seats. Independent candidates won the remaining 3 seats.
Jalalabad Municipal Council Election: AAP won 12 out of the total 17 seats. Remarkably, Jalalabad is considered a stronghold of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. In the 2017 Assembly elections, Badal had defeated the current Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, from this very seat. However, in the 2022 Punjab elections, Badal lost to AAP candidate Jagdeep Kamboj.
Following the victory in these two crucial municipal bodies, AAP workers celebrated enthusiastically. The party cadre stated that this win is proof of the immense trust people have in their leadership.
Dominance in the Local Body Polls
In the local body elections held in Punjab this May, AAP achieved a landslide victory, capturing over 48% of the municipal wards. According to the Punjab State Election Commission (SEC), the ruling party won 954 out of the total 1,977 wards.
The main opposition party, Congress, lagged far behind in second place, winning 393 wards. The Akali Dal won 192 wards, while the BJP secured victory in 172 wards, as per the State Election Commission.
A Much-Needed Boost for the Embattled Party
This victory comes as a major boost for the Aam Aadmi Party, which has been mired in controversies recently. In May this year, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann found himself in a tight spot following allegations that he attended the Assembly session in an inebriated state. The opposition expressed outrage, claiming he arrived under the influence of alcohol for the May Day special sessions, and even demanded breathalyzer tests for everyone.
Furthermore, with the assembly elections scheduled for next year, CM Bhagwant Mann got embroiled in another major controversy. A video purportedly showing him sprinkling alcohol on the portraits of Sikh Gurus went viral, sparking nationwide outrage. This incident drew severe criticism and anger from both Sikh religious organizations and opposition parties.
