China Plays Quiet but Powerful Role in Iran War Diplomacy
By Telugu Times Staff Reporter
US: While missiles and headlines dominate the Iran war, a different kind of power move is happening behind closed doors — and China is at the center of it.In the conflict between US and Iran, China has emerged as an unofficial peacemaker, working the back channels to cool things down.Beijing is not an official mediator, but sources from both Washington and Tehran say it has played an important role in trying to de-escalate the conflict.
The Oil Card:
China’s influence comes down to one word: money. Beijing is the biggest buyer of Iran’s sanctioned oil, and diplomats say it used that financial leverage to push Tehran back to the negotiating table for historic face-to-face talks held in Pakistan earlier this month.
President Trump has publicly said he believes China helped convince Iran to agree to the fragile ceasefire he has since extended.
30 Phone Calls and a Peace Plan:
Foreign Minister Wang Yi made 30 phone calls to various parties involved in the war by mid-April , reaching out to countries including Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. He also presented a five-point proposal calling for an end to hostilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz a critical shipping lane for global oil.
An Irreplaceable Player:
Iran’s ballistic missile program was built with Chinese technology, and China remains one of the few nations to openly show sympathy for Iran at the United Nations. Experts say China can offer Iran something few others can — promises of economic investment and reconstruction support once the war ends.
A Calculated Strategy:
At a time when U.S. alliances are strained under the Trump administration, China’s growing voice in global diplomacy is noteworthy.
