Vedanta Breaks Barriers: Targets 35% Women’s Representation in Core Sectors
Hyderabad: In a landmark move coinciding with International Women’s Day, Vedanta Group has announced an ambitious goal to increase women’s representation to 35% across all organizational levels. To spearhead this transition, the global natural resources giant launched #HerAtTheCore, a nationwide campaign and LinkedIn-led hiring drive aimed at bringing more women into the mining, metals, oil & gas, power, and technology sectors.
Currently, women make up approximately 18% of the general industrial workforce in India, but that figure drops to a mere 6% in core sectors. Vedanta, which already boasts a 23% female workforce, aims to bridge this gap, signaling that the future of India’s industrial growth must be inclusive.
Technology: The Great Equalizer in Heavy Industry
The shift toward a more balanced workforce is being fueled by rapid technological advancement. Modern mining and smelting are no longer defined by physical brawn but by intellectual precision.
Digital Integration: Engineers now manage complex operations through real-time analytics and digital systems.
Automation: Advanced machinery and robotics handle heavy-duty tasks, creating a skill-driven environment where performance is based on capability rather than gender.
Remote Monitoring: Digital operations centers have removed traditional geographical and physical barriers, allowing for a more level playing field.
Pioneering Roles and Operational Milestones
Vedanta has already successfully integrated women into high-stakes frontline roles that were traditionally male-dominated:
World-Record Operations: At the Jharsuguda aluminium smelter in Odisha, an all-women team manages an entire production line (potline).
Underground Mining: Following 2019 reforms, Hindustan Zinc became a pioneer by deploying women engineers in underground mines.
24/7 Resilience: Women at Cairn Oil & Gas have been successfully managing complex hydrocarbon processing systems during night shifts since 2019, supported by enhanced security protocols.
Emergency Response: India’s first all-women underground mine rescue teams from Hindustan Zinc have already gained international recognition for their expertise.
Beyond Hiring: A Framework for Long-term Success
Recognizing that representation requires more than just recruitment, Vedanta has established comprehensive “life-stage” support systems to ensure long-term career growth:
Returnship Programs: Structured pathways for women to re-enter the workforce after maternity leave.
Flexible Ecosystems: Inclusive shift structures and spouse-hiring policies in remote operational hubs.
Specialized Infrastructure: Dedicated lactation rooms and maternity-specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Integrated Living: World-class townships providing high-quality healthcare, education, and childcare facilities near work sites.
The Vision Ahead
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director of Vedanta Ltd., emphasized that while 23% is a strong start, the ultimate goal is 50% representation.
“#HerAtTheCore is both a celebration and a call to action,” Hebbar stated. “We are not only increasing representation — we are redesigning systems to enable women to thrive in core industries.”
By showcasing visible role models and actively recruiting through social media, Vedanta is sending a clear message: women are not just participants, but central figures in the next era of global industrial development.
