Hyderabad ‘s Sekhar Reddy swears in as Chairman of Indian Green Building Council
Hyderabad: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a primary driver of sustainable construction in India, has officially announced its upcoming leadership changes set to take effect on April 1, 2026. This transition marks a new chapter for the institution as it continues to advance sustainable habitat practices nationwide.
New National Leadership
Mr. C. Shekar Reddy, currently serving as the National Vice-Chairman and holding the position of Chairman and Managing Director at CSR Estates Ltd, will elevate to the role of National Chairman. He is slated to succeed Mr. B. Thiagarajan upon the completion of the latter’s successful two-year term. Joining the leadership team, Mr. A. R. Unnikrishnan, who is the Managing Director of the Glass Business at Saint-Gobain India Pvt Ltd., will step in as the new National Vice-Chairman.
Expansion of the Green Footprint
Since its founding in 2001, the IGBC has grown into the leading certification body for resource-efficient and sustainable architecture in India. The council currently reports over 18,850 registered projects, representing a massive cumulative green building footprint of 15.52 billion square feet across the residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors. To support this growth, the IGBC has developed 33 specialized Green and Net Zero Rating Systems that align with international sustainability benchmarks. The organization also represents India on the World Green Building Council, collaborating with international partners to refine best practices for the built environment.
Strategic Vision and Future Focus
Mr. C. Shekar Reddy brings decades of experience to his new role, having been associated with the IGBC since its inception and previously serving as the national president of CREDAI. He has emphasized that sustainability must transition from a specialized interest to a fundamental component of infrastructure design and operation. His goals for the upcoming term include:
- Enhancing urban resilience while maintaining economic vibrancy.
- Prioritizing green retrofits for existing structures to improve their environmental performance.
- Providing affordable green certifications tailored for MSMEs.
- Integrating AI-driven tools to advance holistic designs and improve occupant health and well-being.
- Collaborating with government and industry stakeholders to meet India’s long-term climate commitments through low-carbon, resource-efficient development.
Organizational Impact and Services
Headquartered in Hyderabad, the IGBC operates as a consensus-based, member-driven body within the CII. It provides a variety of services including training programs, certification, and the annual Green Building Congress. The council integrates a wide range of stakeholders—from architects and developers to government agencies—through its local chapters. Today, the IGBC facilitates more than 90 percent of the green buildings in India, with over 7,370 projects fully certified and operational. Its efforts are further supported by government incentives in 14 states, helping India maintain the second-largest green building footprint in the world.

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) was formed in the year 2001. The vision of the council is, “To enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in the sustainable built environment by 2025”.
