Gross GST Collections Rise 13.9% in June to ₹1.94 Lakh Crore
India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections maintained a strong upward trajectory in June, crossing a crucial benchmark. However, a closer look at the underlying data reveals a distinct shift in the growth engine: this month’s revenue surge was primarily driven by a massive spike in customs and import duties rather than domestic business transactions.
According to official statistics released by the central government on Wednesday, gross GST revenue for June jumped 13.9% year-on-year to reach ₹1,94,812 crore. After adjusting for tax refunds, net GST collections posted an 11.2% growth, settling at ₹1.62 lakh crore.
The Core Divergence: Imports Outpace Domestic Growth
The internal metrics highlight a noticeable divergence between domestic consumption and international trade inflows. While overall revenues are up, analysts suggest that domestic retail demand and internal manufacturing consumption have yet to hit their full stride. The revenue streams split into two distinct paths:
Domestic Transactions: Tax collections originating from internal goods and services grew by a modest 6.5%, contributing ₹1.35 lakh crore to the total exchequer.
Import Revenues: Conversely, GST collected on imported goods skyrocketed by a massive 34.6%, bringing in a substantial ₹60,038 crore.
Concurrently, the government cleared a significant volume of tax dues. Total GST refunds for the month ballooned by 29.1% to reach ₹32,436 crore. This included domestic refund clearances of ₹17,767 crore (a 42.9% increase) and import-related refund settlements worth ₹14,669 crore (up 15.6%). Ultimately, while the headline numbers prove that collections remain healthy, international imports are currently doing the heavy lifting for India’s indirect tax growth.
Steady Gains Across Telugu States
Turning to the performance of the Telugu states, both regions maintained positive fiscal momentum during the June review period. Telangana registered a robust 11% increase in tax inflows, pulling in a total GST revenue of ₹5,110 crore. Meanwhile, neighboring Andhra Pradesh recorded a steady 5% growth year-on-year, generating approximately ₹3,548 crore for the month.
