FSSAI Cracks Down on Energy Drink Brands; Issues Notices to Red Bull, PepsiCo, and Four Others Over Misleading Claims
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated strict regulatory action against some of the most popular energy drink brands in the market. Alleging deceptive branding and misleading promotional campaigns, the food safety watchdog has issued formal legal notices to six major brands: Red Bull, PepsiCo (Sting), Reliance Consumer (Campa and Gold Boost), Hell Energy, and Coca-Cola-backed Monster Energy.
The FSSAI clarified that while these corporations heavily market their beverages under the “energy drink” category, the regulatory authority has not yet officially notified or established specific standardized guidelines for such products. Consequently, an active investigation is currently underway to determine the extent to which these companies have violated core statutory branding and packaging regulations.
Ban on Unverified Functional Health Claims
Furthermore, the FSSAI explicitly emphasized that promotional advertisements suggesting specific physiological benefits are strictly prohibited for general food and beverage products under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006. The regulator is specifically cracking down on marketing campaigns that use unverified functional phrases, such as: “Energizes the body”, “Improves focus and concentration”, “Instantly increases energy levels”, “Reduces weakness and fatigue”.
A Broader Push for Consumer Awareness
This regulatory strike against energy drink manufacturers is part of a wider enforcement drive. The authority recently confirmed that it has been actively issuing similar show-cause notices to various other food product companies, acting directly on consumer complaints regarding false advertising and deceptive nutritional claims. To boost public awareness regarding everyday food safety and corporate accountability, the FSSAI stated that it will continue to consistently publish the details of these regulatory crackdowns and enforcement actions across its official social media platforms.
