Cummins and CII Launch Advanced Decision Support System for Cleaner Air
Cummins India, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and NITI Aayog, has launched an advanced Decision Support System (DSS) to enhance air quality management in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Developed alongside the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and Airvoice, this platform provides city authorities with data-driven insights to proactively manage urban air quality.
Key functionalities of the DSS include:
Providing air quality forecasts for up to 72 hours.
Offering actionable insights to identify pollution hotspots and investigate emerging air quality events.
Enabling authorities to anticipate pollution episodes and plan timely interventions.
Evolution of the Cleaner Air Better Life (CABL) Initiative:
The launch marks a significant milestone for the Cleaner Air Better Life (CABL) initiative, a multi-stakeholder platform that unites government, industry, academia, civil society, and local communities. CABL addresses air pollution through four specialized task forces focused on clean transport, clean fuel, clean industry, and biomass management.
According to Shveta Arya, Managing Director of Cummins India Ltd., the expansion of this collaborative model from Delhi to Pune creates a blueprint for resilient urban environments by enabling data-backed, hyperlocal solutions tailored to city-specific emission sources.
Measurable Impact and Future Commitment:
Since its inception, the CABL forum has transitioned from policy discussions to on-ground implementation, achieving notable environmental outcomes across rural India:
Engaged with over 1 lakh farmers.
Prevented the burning of 6.4 lakh tonnes of crop residue.
Conserved 71 billion liters of water.
Reduced an estimated 1.3 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions across 432 villages and 4.8 lakh acres.
As noted by Ashish Aggarwal, Executive Director & Chief Administrative Officer of Cummins India, these efforts reflect the company’s commitment to sustainability that extends beyond its own operations to serve the broader community. Shikhar Jain, Executive Director of CII–CESD, emphasized that the initiative demonstrates how the integration of technology and collaboration can accelerate environmental progress and improve public health.
