Mohanlal Ivory Case: Fresh Court Development Puts Spotlight on Final Verdict
A fresh development has reignited attention on the long running ivory possession case involving Malayalam superstar Mohanlal. Documents submitted by the actor under the Voluntary Disclosure Scheme to the Income Tax Department have now come under the Kerala High Court’s scrutiny.
According to the records, Mohanlal had declared possession of 10 elephant tusks and 13 ivory artifacts. The disclosure has added a new legal dimension to a case that has remained under judicial consideration for over a decade.
The case dates back to 2011, when an Income Tax raid at the actor’s Kochi residence led to the seizure of four elephant tusks. Following the recovery, the Kerala Forest Department registered a case under the Wildlife Protection Act, alleging illegal possession of ivory. During the latest hearing, Mohanlal’s counsel argued that the actor had already disclosed the ivory items under the state’s ivory amnesty scheme and had complied with all applicable requirements, contending that no legal violation had occurred.
The central issue before the Kerala High Court, however, is whether Mohanlal had obtained the mandatory ownership certificate from the Forest Department within the prescribed legal framework. While disclosure of the assets to the Income Tax Department is not in dispute, the court is examining whether the statutory ownership documentation was secured in accordance with the law.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the High Court has reserved its decision. The upcoming verdict is expected to play a crucial role in determining the future course of the high-profile case.
