Aviva Becomes First Foreign Insurer to Take 100% Control of Indian Life Insurance Business
In a landmark development for the Indian insurance sector, UK-based insurance giant Aviva has agreed to acquire the remaining 26% stake in its Indian joint venture held by its domestic partner, Dabur Invest Corp. With this acquisition, Aviva will become the first foreign life insurance corporation to secure absolute 100% ownership of its Indian life insurance operations. This significant transaction marks the first major buyout since the central government amended its foreign direct investment (FDI) guidelines to permit 100% foreign ownership in the insurance industry.
Aviva originally entered the Indian market in 2001 through this joint venture with the Dabur Group. Over the years, the British insurer systematically scaled up its equity presence—increasing its stake to 49% in 2016, and subsequently raising it to 74% in 2022. This final acquisition successfully concludes a corporate partnership spanning more than two decades, granting Aviva total operational control. While the buyout has been mutually finalized, Aviva has chosen not to publicly disclose the financial valuation of the transaction.
Operational Autonomy and Strategic Expansion Opportunities
Industry analysts point out that full ownership will give Aviva India significantly higher corporate agility. The complete exit of the domestic partner allows the global parent company to accelerate boardroom decision-making, deploy independent capital injections, and execute aggressive long-term business expansion strategies without partner alignment constraints.
Currently, Aviva India manages a substantial asset base, with its total Assets Under Management (AUM) standing at ₹16,316 crore. During the 2025-26 fiscal year (FY26), the insurer recorded a premium income of ₹1,343 crore. While the company achieved a healthy 10% growth in its new business premium collections, its net profit experienced a 21.7% contraction, landing at ₹84.15 crore for the fiscal year.
Financial Resilience Amid Scale Challenges
Financially, Aviva India remains on solid ground, boasting a healthy solvency ratio of 188%, which sits comfortably above the regulatory minimum requirement. Despite this financial stability, the insurer has historically faced headwinds in aggressively scaling up its domestic market share, primarily due to a relatively limited physical branch network compared to legacy domestic competitors.
Nevertheless, Aviva’s decisive move to capitalize on the relaxed 100% FDI framework is being viewed as a major corporate precedent. Market experts anticipate that this complete buyout will serve as a definitive blueprint for several other prominent foreign insurance conglomerates that have been waiting to take full ownership of their respective Indian insurance ventures.
