Apple Sues OpenAI and Two Former Employees for Stealing Hardware Trade Secrets
The escalating rivalry between global tech giants Apple and OpenAI has officially reached the courtroom. Just as OpenAI begins making rapid strides into the consumer hardware market, Apple has filed a lawsuit in the United States, accusing the AI firm of illegally utilizing its commercial trade secrets. In a complaint filed in the Northern California District Court, Apple alleges that former employees colluded with OpenAI to transfer highly classified information, including production designs, manufacturing processes, and supply chain strategies. Specifically, the lawsuit names a former employee, Liu, who allegedly downloaded confidential files from the internal network and failed to return a company laptop. Another former employee, Tan, is accused of forwarding sensitive Apple supplier data and internal industry reports directly to his personal email. Furthermore, Apple claims that OpenAI explicitly asked prospective hires to bring Apple hardware components to their job interviews.
Corporate Espionage Risks Strain Existing AI Partnership
Highlighting the scale of the potential threat, Apple’s legal filing notes that there are currently over 400 former Apple employees working at OpenAI, significantly increasing the risk of widespread corporate espionage and the misuse of confidential data. The iPhone maker also accused OpenAI personnel of attempting to extract sensitive information directly from Apple’s supply chain network and utilizing its proprietary metal finishing technology without proper authorization. Interestingly, despite this fierce legal confrontation, the two tech behemoths remain intertwined in a major business partnership. Apple has already integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT services into its newly launched Apple Intelligence ecosystem. However, this escalating conflict over artificial intelligence dominance, hardware innovation, talent acquisition, and intellectual property strongly signals that their high-profile partnership is now under severe strain.
