How Google Banned Its Own Gemini AI from Internal Use: What Really Happened

Google is a tech giant ruling the digital world. It created and launched an advanced AI model named ‘Gemini’, leaving the entire world eager to use it. But do you know what was happening inside Google’s offices at the very same time? The company set a rule: “Anyone else can use it… but our engineers cannot use Gemini for coding!”

As unbelievable as it sounds, it is 100% true! Google co-founder Sergey Brin himself recently revealed this bizarre incident on a podcast.

What Was the Real Reason for the Ban?
Normally, if a tool is banned, we assume it had security flaws or wasn’t working properly. But in Gemini’s case, that wasn’t the reason at all!

An Old Rule: Google maintains an internal list (‘No List’) for coding tools used by developers. Somewhere along the line, someone put Gemini on this blocklist for “weird historical reasons.”

An Outdated Webpage: Times changed… Gemini grew to become one of the best AI tools in the world. However, everyone forgot to update that internal Google webpage!

Cautious Engineers: Since the rule remained on paper (in the system)… engineers avoided using their own company’s AI to steer clear of technical headaches.

Troubles Even for the Co-Founder!
When Sergey Brin prepared to code again after a long time and tried to use Gemini, he ran into this ban notice. Even for Brin—who holds billions of dollars in shares and unlimited authority in the company—seeing this situation was mind-boggling.

When he tried to lift the restriction… he had a tough time dealing with Google’s internal teams. Getting even a small change made required chasing internal approvals for weeks. Realizing things weren’t moving with lower-level officials, a frustrated Brin finally had to go straight to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The story reached a happy ending when Sundar Pichai stepped in and announced the removal of that strange ban.

The Real Message Behind This!
While many see this as a clear sign of flaws within Google’s bureaucracy… Sergey Brin analyzed it from a different perspective. He commented: “Even if a company co-founder speaks up, Google’s culture allows employees the freedom to challenge decisions by pointing to the rulebook.”

Whatever the case, a tech giant teaching the world about AI… having its own bosses fight just to use their own product inside their office is truly a great irony!
