Scientists Peek Inside an AI’s ‘Brain’ for the First Time..! What Did They Find?
— Surya Prakash Josyula
Just think about it for a moment… AI answers questions in seconds. It writes code in the blink of an eye, creates photos, and talks just like humans. But what actually happens inside the ‘brain’ of an AI that works so fast? Does it also have a secret space, just like our human brain, to hide thoughts before speaking them out loud? When scientists tried to find the answer, what did they actually see inside the AI?
An fascinating answer to that very question has now been found. A recent study by Anthropic revealed that they have identified an internal workspace called “J-Space” inside Claude AI. Researchers say that before giving a final answer, the AI processes certain thoughts within this internal workspace. To detect this, they used a new analytical method called the “Jacobian Lens.”
Even more surprising is that during safety tests, before the AI could act on dangerous prompts, this tool was able to spot hidden patterns of intentions like manipulation and blackmail within its internal thoughts ahead of time, according to Anthropic.
With this, a debate has started worldwide: “Have the days come where we can understand not just the answers AI gives us, but also the thought process happening behind them?” However, scientists clarify that this does not mean AI has gained human-like consciousness; rather, it is a crucial step forward in understanding exactly how AI thinks.
