FIA and Consulate General of India Celebrate 8th Annual International Women’s Day in New York
NEW YORK, NY – The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) NY-NJ-CT-NE, the preeminent grassroots organization for the Indian diaspora in the Northeastern United States, hosted its 8th Annual International Women’s Day celebration on March 6, 2026. Held at the India House in New York City, the signature event honored the exceptional achievements of women leaders who have broken barriers and inspired the community across sectors including business, media, finance, and social entrepreneurship.
The evening, emceed by Riddhi Parikh Patel, began with a somber moment of silence for the late Radha Subramanyam, a former award recipient. FIA President Sreekanth Akkapalli, who took office earlier this year, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to female empowerment. On behalf of FIA Chairman Ankur Vaidya and the executive board, Akkapalli expressed deep gratitude for the transformative impact these women have made on society before introducing the guest of honor, Ambassador Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York.
In his keynote address, Ambassador Pradhan highlighted women’s empowerment as a cornerstone of national progress. He detailed several of India’s flagship initiatives, such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and the Ujjwala Yojana, and noted the success of economic programs connecting 100 million households to women-led self-help groups. He also paid a personal tribute to his wife, Monalisa Shuvadarshini, for her unwavering support.
The 2026 honorees were presented with Certificates of Recognition from Governor Kathy Hochul, alongside FIA trophies and sashes. Notable speakers included Jody Lynne Herkloz of Northstar Strategies, who called for women to uplift one another, and Dr. Balpreet Grewal-Virk of Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health, who credited the strength of the immigrant experience for her success. Actress Reshma Shetty and NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Tania Kinsella also shared moving reflections on motherhood, cultural legacy, and overcoming generational barriers.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks from FIA General Secretary Srishti Kaul Narula. Since its founding in 1970, the FIA has remained dedicated to strengthening Indo-US ties and advancing gender equality through advocacy and service.
