It has been quite some time since Ravi Teja delivered a proper hit after Dhamaka. Similarly, Shiva Nirvana has not been able to repeat the success of Majili. Now, the two have joined hands for Irumudi. The film features Nakshatra, Priya Bhavani Shankar and Sai Kumar in key roles. Produced by Mythri Movie Makers and T-Series and directed by Shiva Nirvana, Irumudi brings together a father-daughter sentiment, a social message and an intense family drama. The teaser and trailer suggested that the film would blend several emotional and dramatic elements. The movie has now arrived in theatres. So, what is Irumudi all about and how does it fare? Let’s take a look.
Story
Trinath (Ravi Teja) is a banana trader in Polluru. He also works as a truck driver and leads a happy life with his wife Kaveri (Priya Bhavani Shankar) and daughter Manikantha (Nakshatra), fondly called Manemma.Trinath has immense love and affection for his daughter. He brings her up with the belief that she should tell him everything she sees while going to or returning from school.Except for the 41 days during which he observes Ayyappa Deeksha, Trinath drinks alcohol regularly. Despite Kaveri repeatedly asking him to give up drinking, he refuses to listen. Interestingly, even his daughter Manemma supports his drinking habit.Trinath considers Manemma, whom he believes was blessed to him through the grace of Lord Ayyappa, as his entire world. He treats every girl in Polluru village as his own daughter.
Whenever any girl faces a problem or anyone causes trouble to a woman, Trinath refuses to remain silent. As a result, he ends up making several enemies.Trinath considers Guruswamy Goparaju (Sai Kumar), a resident of the same village, almost like a member of his own family. At one point, Goparaju’s daughter Gayathri faces a serious problem. Manemma comes to know about it, but she is unable to tell her father. What kind of trouble does Trinath’s drinking habit create for his family? Why does he love his daughter so deeply? Why does Manemma never go against her father’s word? How does Trinath’s way of dealing with problems in Polluru continue to affect his life? What kind of bond does he share with Guruswamy Goparaju? What is the role of the MLA (Ramesh Indira) in the story? What injustice happens to Manemma? How does Trinath take revenge for the injustice done to his daughter? What exactly happened to Gayathri? Who is behind the suspicious deaths of girls in the village? What are the roles of teacher Dhanalakshmi (Swasika), MLA Bujji, Nagulu and the four local troublemakers from Donkaraya village? The answers to all these questions form the story of Irumudi.
Performances
Ravi Teja is impressive this time as an ordinary middle-class father. Trinath is a character that is completely different from his usual ‘Mass Maharaja’ image. Ravi Teja has clearly moved away from his star image for this role and completely immersed himself in the character. He looks natural as Trinath and delivers an emotionally strong performance. In some scenes, Ravi Teja manages to bring tears to the audience’s eyes. The father-daughter chemistry has been established very well. He remains completely restrained, unlike his usual style, and allows the character to speak for itself. He is equally effective in the emotional sequences and action episodes. As Manemma, Nakshatra is the main asset of the film. She delivers a highly natural performance and handles several emotional scenes convincingly. Her performance also helps elevate Ravi Teja’s character.Priya Bhavani Shankar provides the film with the required feel-good factor. Although her character does not appear to have as much importance as the other principal characters, her chemistry with Ravi Teja works well on screen.Sai Kumar stands like a backbone for the film. Ajay Ghosh, Swasika, Meesala Lakshman, Gayathri and the other actors also perform well and do justice to their respective roles.
Technical Aspects
G.V. Prakash Kumar’s music is one of the biggest strengths of the film. Not only the songs, but also the background score plays a crucial role. The BGM does more than simply drive the story; it elevates the emotional and action sequences to a higher level. The visuals are top-notch. At several points, the visual quality makes us wonder whether we are watching a rural drama or a much larger-scale production.Every dialogue written by Shiva Nirvana about how girls should be raised and protected is impressive. However, at one point, the hero says, “If anyone troubles the girls of my village…” It would have been more impactful if the dialogue had instead referred to “any girl” who faces such a problem. The subtitles, however, are a major disappointment. Almost none of them appear to be properly in sync. At times, it feels as though the subtitles were prepared for a Malayalam version. The editing is sharp and the production values are rich. Cinematographer Vishnu Sharma has effectively created the required mood and emotions for the film. The editing and art departments have also done a good job.As always, Mythri Movie Makers maintain high production standards, and the rich production values are clearly visible on screen.
Analysis
To sum it up, Irumudi maintains good intensity throughout the first half. Trinath’s characterisation, his combination scenes with Manemma and the problems faced by the girls in the village create strong curiosity. The screenplay keeps the audience wondering how Trinath will get caught up in these problems and whether those issues will eventually reach his home and affect his daughter. The interval block is particularly impressive. The entire second half carries a divine feeling. Ayyappa devotees, in particular, may find this portion visually and emotionally satisfying. In fact, one gets the feeling that the film could have benefited even more had it been released during the Karthika Masam, considering the devotional atmosphere of the second half. The film picks up pace considerably from the pre-climax. The eventual twist revelation and the hero’s aggressive retaliation may feel familiar, but the climax itself comes across as fresh. The song that arrives at the end is emotionally moving and is sure to touch the audience. By the time the climax concludes, the film leaves the audience with a sense of satisfaction.
Irumudi is a family entertainer built around father-daughter sentiment, the divine presence of Lord Ayyappa and a rural backdrop. The film blends emotions, family drama, action and comedy effectively. As a result, the movie does not feel boring at any point. Instead, it establishes an emotional connection with the audience and makes them travel along with the story.Ravi Teja delivers one of the best performances of his career. Baby Nakshatra and the other young girls also perform extremely well.
Final Verdict
If you are looking for a good family entertainer with strong emotional content this week, don’t miss Irumudi. The film has plenty of potential to emerge as a super hit.
