Vedanta Power Appoints Ex-NPCIL Executive Kishor U Agrawal as Director, Nuclear Strategy & Advisory
Vedanta Power Limited has appointed Kishor U Agrawal, a former senior executive at the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), as Director, Nuclear Strategy & Advisory. In this role, Agrawal will focus on evaluating opportunities within India’s expanding nuclear energy sector, assessing technology choices, exploring potential partnerships, and formulating a 5–10 GW long-term nuclear generation roadmap. Bringing over three decades of core industry expertise, Agrawal served 35 years at NPCIL retiring as Associate Director where he led major projects including Kakrapar, Tarapur, and Rajasthan atomic power stations. He subsequently served as Vice President, Nuclear Business at Jindal India Power Limited and as Joint Secretary of the Indian Nuclear Society.
Regulatory Policy Framework and India’s Nuclear Energy Ambitions:
The strategic appointment aligns with major structural reforms in India’s nuclear energy policy following the passage of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, 2025. The legislation establishes a legal and regulatory framework enabling private sector entry into nuclear power generation under Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) oversight. Under the national Nuclear Energy Mission, India targets expanding its total nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047 utilizing indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), Light Water Reactors (LWRs), and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). According to Atomic Energy Commission estimates, private capital participation is expected to reach ₹7.5 lakh crore, accounting for roughly 30 GW of capacity by 2047.
Thermal Expansion and Portfolio Scaling:
Alongside its nuclear growth evaluation, Vedanta Power is actively accelerating the expansion of its conventional generation footprint. The company currently maintains 4,180 MW of operational thermal capacity, with 600 MW under active commissioning. Its long-term roadmap includes adding 7,200 MW at its Sakti thermal power project in Chhattisgarh, aiming to scale total operational generation capacity to approximately 12 GW by FY33 and 20 GW in the long run.
