UPI Transactions See Minor Monthly Dip in June to ₹28.9 Lakh Crore
Following a historic, record-breaking surge in May, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions experienced a marginal month-on-month contraction in June. Despite this slight seasonal cooling, the broader growth trajectory of the country’s digital payments ecosystem remains incredibly robust. According to official performance metrics released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform processed a massive 2,272 crore (22.72 billion) transactions in June, accumulating a total financial value of ₹28.9 lakh crore. This represents a minor drop from the ₹29.9 lakh crore high recorded in May, but highlights the sustained dominance of cashless architecture.
Historic Daily Averages and Massive Annual Expansion
When evaluated against the performance of June last year, the macro expansion of UPI is undeniable. The total transaction value surged by 20% year-on-year, while the overall volume of digital checkouts grew by nearly 24%. Furthermore, the month of June registered a historic milestone by averaging an unprecedented 75.7 crore daily transactions—the highest daily average ever recorded in UPI history. Reeju Datta, co-founder of Cashfree Payments, noted that everyday citizens are systematically moving away from physical cash, heavily relying on digital payments for even their smallest micro-transactions and daily necessities.
Over the past 12 months alone, the volume of monthly UPI transactions has increased by more than 430 crore, capturing an additional market value of nearly ₹5 lakh crore. Fintech industry analysts also emphasize that India’s indigenous digital payment architecture is gaining significant international prestige. UPI services have successfully gone live across more than eight global destinations—including the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius, and Qatar. This aggressive cross-border expansion is positioning India’s public fintech infrastructure as a premier global benchmark for real-time retail payments.
