Trump Announces Up to 200% Tariffs on Generic Drugs; Move May Impact India
US President Donald Trump has announced a strict new tariff policy on the import of generic medicines. Starting August 1 this year, generic drugs imported into the United States will face zero tariffs for the first two years. However, immediately following this grace period, a 100% tariff will be imposed in the third year, eventually escalating to a staggering 200%.
Trump stated that the primary objective behind this decision is to aggressively promote the domestic manufacturing of generic drugs within the US and drastically reduce the country’s reliance on foreign imports. He also issued a stark warning that companies failing to establish manufacturing units in the US within the stipulated timeframe will face severe financial penalties. However, he clarified that the current regulatory and tariff policies governing patented and branded drugs will remain completely unchanged.
Massive Implications for the ‘Pharmacy of the World’
This protectionist move is expected to send shockwaves through the Indian pharmaceutical sector. Widely recognized as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’, India is a dominant and critical supplier to the American healthcare system. Currently, India accounts for nearly 40% of all generic drugs consumed in the US by volume.
The financial stakes are exceptionally high. In the 2024–25 financial year, India exported pharmaceuticals worth $9.7 billion to the US, which constitutes 38% of the country’s total global pharma exports.
Indian generic medicines play a vital role in the US healthcare market, providing affordable treatments across several critical segments, including:
– High blood pressure and Diabetes
– Cancer and Depression
-Various infectious diseases
To put India’s market dominance into perspective, in the contraceptive pill segment alone, approximately 65% of all birth control pills prescribed in the US in 2024 were manufactured by Indian pharmaceutical giants like Glenmark and Lupin.
Hopes Pinned on Bilateral Trade Agreements
Despite the alarming nature of the announcement, some industry insiders remain cautiously optimistic. There is an underlying expectation within the sector that the recently concluded bilateral trade agreement between India and the US might yield certain exemptions or relaxations specifically for Indian generic drugs and their essential raw materials. Nevertheless, Trump’s latest tariff declaration has undeniably triggered widespread anxiety and uncertainty among Indian pharma exporters regarding the future of their largest market.
