National Agro Foundation Launches Landmark Initiative to Strengthen 10 FPOs
Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, June 26 — The National Agro Foundation (NAF) has announced a significant strategic initiative, backed by a grant from the Walmart Foundation, to support and empower more than 12,500 smallholder farming households across Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The project focuses on 10 targeted Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to enhance market access, deploy climate-resilient agricultural methodologies, and build stable, long-term livelihood opportunities. Crucially, the initiative places women farmers at the center of rural economic development during the International Year of Women Farmers.
Driving FPO-Led Rural Economic Transformation
The comprehensive project, titled “Empowering 12,500 Farmers belonging to Selected 10 FPOs of Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh for Sustainable Economic Development and Climate Resilience,” aims to convert local FPOs into highly sustainable, community-led enterprises.
Rather than viewing smallholders simply as primary producers, the program is designed to equip them to act as agricultural entrepreneurs capable of successfully responding to evolving climate challenges.
To achieve this, NAF is deploying its initiative across three interconnected operational pillars:
Sustainable Economic Empowerment: Optimizing agricultural production alongside advanced value-chain integration to boost net household income.
Strengthening FPOs for Long-Term Sustainability: Building robust governance structures and resilient, self-sustaining financial models within the local institutions.
Enhancing Women’s Participation: Cultivating inclusive and sustainable rural livelihoods by positioning women at the forefront of agricultural leadership.
Integration of High-Tech Digital Solutions
A defining hallmark of NAF’s strategy for this initiative is the extensive integration of information technology into rural ecosystem management. NAF will utilize its specialized, multi-module KANCHI Digital Platform to significantly upgrade the administrative and commercial capacity of the selected FPOs.
By leveraging this proprietary digital framework, the project will implement data-driven decision-making, optimize real-time financial tracking, improve internal governance transparency, and introduce real-time market intelligence to streamline localized crop procurement.
Leadership and Stakeholder Insights
Highlighting the scale and historical alignment of the partnership, Dr. M. R. Ramasubramaniyan, Chief Executive Officer of the National Agro Foundation, stated:
“This is a landmark initiative with the generous support from the Walmart Foundation that aims to benefit over 12,500 smallholder farmers with income enhancement… NAF, founded by the visionary Mr. C. Subramaniam, the architect of India’s Green Revolution, with its 25+ years of standing has long been attempting to empower small farm holders. The support of the Walmart Foundation has bolstered NAF’s commitment to serving the farming community in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
Nishant Gupta, Social & Environmental Impact Advisor to Walmart.org, emphasized the systemic impact of building local institutional capacity:
“FPOs have the potential to be powerful engines of rural economic growth when they are equipped with the right capabilities, market connections, and tools. Through support from the Walmart Foundation, this initiative will help NAF to strengthen local institutions that can serve farmers for years to come, with a particular focus on advancing opportunities for women farmers across Andhra Pradesh.”
The ultimate objective of this collaboration is to establish a fully replicable model of FPO-led economic transformation. By driving structural integration between FPOs and Self-Help Groups (SHGs), NAF and the Walmart Foundation aim to foster an inclusive, market-integrated agricultural ecosystem that builds durable prosperity directly from within the farming communities of Andhra Pradesh.
