Rajamouli Delighted as IMAX Returns to Hyderabad Ahead of Varanasi Release
As S.S. Rajamouli’s highly anticipated epic Varanasi gears up for its theatrical release in 2027, the return of IMAX theaters to Hyderabad has added another layer of excitement for movie lovers. Reacting to the development, Rajamouli said he had been waiting for IMAX to make a comeback to the city for a long time, calling it a much needed milestone for Telugu cinema audiences.
The filmmaker praised the passion of moviegoers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, describing them as some of the biggest film enthusiasts in the world. According to Rajamouli, Telugu audiences embrace not only regional cinema but also Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hollywood films with equal enthusiasm, making cinema an integral part of their culture and emotions.
He emphasized that film lovers in the Telugu states deserve access to the best cinematic technology available. Rajamouli believes that bringing IMAX back to Hyderabad is a fitting tribute to an audience that consistently celebrates quality filmmaking, regardless of language or industry.
Reflecting on the city’s exhibition history, Rajamouli recalled that Prasads IMAX once housed a world class 70mm IMAX projection system, offering a truly unmatched theatrical experience. However, after the transition to digital IMAX, Hyderabad gradually lost that distinction. While several other cities gained IMAX screens over the years, the absence of one in Hyderabad remained a disappointment for him as a filmmaker and a movie enthusiast.
Now, with IMAX finally returning to the city, Rajamouli said he is thrilled that audiences will be able to experience visually ambitious films on the biggest and best possible format. He added that the timing is particularly special, as Varanasi, a film designed with grand scale visuals and immersive storytelling, will now have the opportunity to be enjoyed in premium IMAX presentation by Hyderabad audiences.
