JERA Signs Binding Heads of Agreement With AM Green For Long Term Supply Of Green Ammonia For Maritime Decarbonization
JERA Co., Inc. and AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited, backed by investors like Gentari and GIC, announced on October 28, 2026, that they have entered into a binding Heads of Agreement for the long-term supply of green ammonia produced in India. The agreement establishes the supply of approximately seventy thousand tonnes of green ammonia annually over five years, with potential extensions for additional supply. The green ammonia will be supplied through receiving, storage, and distribution facilities being developed adjacent to JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, and is primarily intended for a business venture jointly established by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha to supply fuel via ammonia bunkering vessels to ammonia-fueled car carriers, marking one of the first large-scale green ammonia-based bunkering initiatives globally.
Meeting internationally recognized low-carbon standards benchmarked against European market requirements, the green ammonia will be produced at AM Green’s Kakinada facility in Andhra Pradesh, India, scheduled for commissioning by 2028 or 2029. The facility will utilize advanced alkaline electrolysis powered by round-the-clock renewable energy supported by pumped-hydro storage. This partnership advances JERA’s end-to-end low-carbon ammonia value chain across production, transportation, storage, and utilization, extending the use of ammonia beyond power generation to maritime fuel and industrial sectors in Japan. Irtiza Sayyed, JERA’s Senior Managing Executive Officer and JERA Global Energy Solutions CEO, emphasized that the agreement connects diversified sources of ammonia with customer decarbonization needs in Japan, while Mahesh Kolli, Group President and Joint Managing Director of AM Green, noted that the milestone reflects growing demand for competitively priced green molecules from India and reinforces the strategic role of the Kakinada project in supporting the global energy transition.
