Is Airtel Limiting Hotspot Use on Unlimited 5G Plans? Users Think So

A new controversy has erupted over Airtel’s unlimited 5G data services. According to a screenshot that has gone viral on social media over the past two days, users who have activated the unlimited 5G plan cannot share their data with other devices via a mobile hotspot. The screenshot suggests that any data consumed through a hotspot will be automatically deducted from the user’s daily 4G data quota rather than the unlimited 5G allowance.

User Backlash and Technical Tracking
While this specific condition is not currently visible in Airtel’s official terms and conditions, the circulating information has triggered intense debates online. Employees and students who heavily rely on mobile hotspots for their laptops are expressing severe dissatisfaction, with several users openly declaring their intention to port their numbers to Reliance Jio.

Telecom experts explain that enforcing such a restriction is entirely technically feasible for telecom operators. When a user turns on a mobile hotspot, the network provider can easily detect the connected devices using advanced network-level tracking technologies, such as:

– Time to Live (TTL) data signals
– Operating System (OS) fingerprinting
– Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)

Hidden Data Caps and Competitor Strategies
Beyond the hotspot limitation, another major point of contention is a hidden data cap. Despite heavily marketing the service as “unlimited 5G,” discussions are rife that Airtel has quietly imposed a maximum Fair Usage Policy (FUP) limit of 300GB per month.

In stark contrast, Airtel’s primary competitor, Reliance Jio, is adopting a completely different strategy. Jio has clarified that users within its True 5G coverage can enjoy unlimited data, including completely unrestricted hotspot usage. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea (Vi) does not currently restrict hotspot sharing but allegedly maintains a similar 300GB data cap for a 28-day period, much like Airtel.

Market analysts believe that if telecom companies impose such stringent restrictions, customers who work from home are highly likely to shift their loyalties toward Jio, a move that could significantly impact the overall market share dynamics.
