Iconic British Brand Lion Brewery Co Re-Enters India After a 60-Year Hiatus
After an extended gap of nearly 60 years, the renowned British beer manufacturer Lion Brewery Co has made a grand return to the Indian market. Established in London in 1836, the historic brewery originally produced its signature India Pale Ale (IPA) specifically for export to India during the British era. Now, setting its sights on the country’s rapidly expanding premium beer segment, the company has officially launched its products in the national capital, New Delhi.
For its highly anticipated comeback, Lion Brewery Co has entered into an exclusive distribution agreement with Copperdrop Spirits. In the initial phase, the company has introduced two distinct variants to the Delhi market—Island Lager and Pale Ale—both available in standard 330 ml bottles. Following the capital launch, the company has revealed plans to gradually expand its supply chain and footprint into the neighboring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
The timing of this re-entry aligns perfectly with India’s evolving alcohol consumption trends. While the overall Indian beer market is experiencing a steady annual growth rate of 8 to 10 percent, the premium and craft beer segment is witnessing a phenomenal surge, growing at an impressive pace of over 40 percent.
Commenting on the launch, Lion Brewery Co Managing Director Will Julius stated that India is not just another new market for the brand, but a deeply ingrained part of its core history. He expressed immense enthusiasm about returning to the country during a period of such booming demand for premium, high-quality beer offerings.
