Google Bets on Selfie Video for Account Recovery, But Experts Urge Caution
Global tech giant Google has rolled out a brand-new feature for its users designed to make regaining access to locked accounts easier. The new account recovery option, dubbed “Selfie for Sign-in,” allows users who have lost access to their passwords, phones, or other primary authentication methods to verify their identity and recover their accounts using a short selfie video. Google clarified that this new biometric feature is not intended to be a complete replacement for standard passwords, but rather serves as an additional, fallback recovery option.
How the AI-Powered Verification Works
To use this feature, customers must first opt-in by recording a reference video, which involves turning their face from various angles to capture a complete profile. If account recovery is needed in the future, the user will be prompted to record a new selfie video. Google then uses advanced security verifications to compare the two videos, relying on:
– AI-driven facial matching
– Liveness detection
– Head movement verification
The company stated that these strict parameters are specifically designed to prevent fraud through static photos, pre-recorded videos, or AI-generated deepfakes. Furthermore, Google assured users that all reference videos are stored in an encrypted format and can be manually deleted by the customer at any time.
Cybersecurity Experts Raise Red Flags
Despite the convenience and Google’s encryption promises, cybersecurity experts are expressing serious reservations about the new feature. Their primary concern revolves around the immutable nature of biometric data. If a traditional password is leaked in a data breach, a user can simply change it. However, if a user’s facial biometric data is compromised or misused, it cannot be altered or reset. Experts are strongly advising users to exercise extreme caution and never provide selfie verification videos through unverified websites, third-party apps, or suspicious phishing links.
