Godrej Pet Care Enters Andhra Pradesh & Telangana with ‘Godrej Ninja’ Pet Food Brand
HYDERABAD — Godrej Pet Care (GPC), a subsidiary of Godrej Consumer Products Ltd. (GCPL), has officially announced its entry into the high-growth markets of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The expansion introduces the company’s ‘Godrej Ninja’ brand, a specialized line of scientifically formulated dog food engineered to boost immunity and optimize canine gut health.
The launch follows a highly successful market debut in Tamil Nadu and signals a significant step forward in the corporation’s strategic multi-phased roadmap to establish a robust pan-India presence in the emerging pet care sector.
Evaluating India’s Sunrise Pet Care Economy
The pet care industry represents an emerging sunrise category for Godrej Consumer Products. Out of an estimated ₹6,000 crore total Indian pet care market, pet food occupies the lion’s share at ₹5,000 crore, holding the potential for strong double-digit growth over the next few decades.
Despite rising pet ownership across Indian urban tiers, the structural penetration of packaged pet food remains remarkably low:
Ownership & Feeding Habits: Currently, approximately 10% of Indians own a pet. Among this demographic, only around 10% feed their pets packaged food, doing so just 40% of the time.
Calorie Conversion: India’s overall calorie conversion rate stands at just 5%. For context, China’s market followed a nearly identical trajectory 15 years ago; today, its pet ownership approaches 20% with a calorie conversion rate of 25%.
The South Indian Market Landscape
The South Indian region represents a significant ₹1,800–2,000 crore segment of the national pet food market. Industry metrics position Karnataka as the largest individual state market, followed sequentially by Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. In terms of percentage contribution to nationwide pet food sales, the metrics are distributed as follows:
Karnataka 15%, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana 8%, Tamil Nadu 8%, Kerala 5%
Established in 2024, Godrej Pet Care effectively fuses the structural animal nutrition expertise of Godrej Agrovet with the extensive brand-building, marketing, and deeply entrenched distribution networks of Godrej Consumer Products. Backed by the specialized Nadir Godrej Centre for Animal Research & Development, the entity remains focused on delivering science-led, highly trusted nutritional assets to Indian households.
Strategic Capital Allocation and Regional Focus
To aggressively drive category adoption, the firm is prioritizing affordability alongside scientific validation. Commenting on the geographic expansion, Nitin Jain, Chief Operating Officer of Godrej Pet Care, stated:
“South India is a key growth market for India’s pet care industry and presents a significant opportunity for long-term category development. Godrej Pet Care is democratising the pet food category by offering great quality product at an affordable price-point than those available in the market. The encouraging response to Godrej Ninja in Tamil Nadu has validated the growing demand for science-led nutrition among pet parents. With a ₹500 crore investment in pet care over the next few years, we are aiming for rapid expansion in Southern India by making high-quality pet food nutrition accessible to a larger community of pet parents.”
Jain further identified Hyderabad, Vijayawada, and Visakhapatnam as crucial, rapidly accelerating hubs for the regional pet care economy. Driven by a rising demographic of younger urban pet parents and an increasing preference for premium packaged nutrition, the company expects the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana markets to outpace the national pet food industry’s annual growth rate of 14%.
The “3P” Formulation: Scientific Innovation for Canine Immunity
Unlike standard home-cooked variations which often lead to undetected nutritional imbalances and subsequent health deficiencies, Godrej Ninja is formulated specifically to optimize a pet’s internal ecosystem. The product line was designed, developed, and rigorously evaluated in India at the Nadir Godrej Centre for Animal Research & Development.
Dr. Ashok Pattanaik, Head of Research & Development at Godrej Pet Care and former Principal Scientist at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, highlighted the critical biological link between nutrition and canine health:
“As humans, we instinctively balance our diets for immunity — curd for probiotics, cereals for energy, and chicken or fish for protein. Pet dogs need something equally complete. Nearly 70% of a dog’s immune system resides in the gut, meaning poor nutrition directly weakens immunity. Gastrointestinal issues account for nearly 30% of vet visits — a clear signal that scientifically formulated food with the right immuno-nutrients is not a luxury, but a necessity. Ninja, therefore, is designed to improve digestive health and immunity of dogs through a scientifically formulated 3P blend of Probiotics, Prebiotics and Polyphenols, along with 37 balanced nutrients targeted to optimize health and overall wellbeing.”
