AM/NS India Becomes World’s First Steelmaker to Produce Ultra-High Strength Welded Pipes for Offshore Marine Engineering
NEW DELHI : In a major breakthrough for the global steel industry, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has achieved a world first by successfully manufacturing ultra-high strength welded pipes equivalent to the prestigious API 5L X100Q (EQ70 grade) standard.
The achievement has been officially certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the leading global maritime classification society. This certification independently validates that the pipes meet the most stringent international benchmarks for safety, structural integrity, and performance in harsh marine environments a mandatory requirement for major international offshore and marine projects.
Breaking the Import Monopoly:
Traditionally, critical offshore applications such as oil and gas platforms, deepwater pipelines, and wind energy structures reclaimed heavy structural reliance on seamless pipes imported at high costs from Europe. AM/NS India’s breakthrough disrupts this supply chain by providing a technically superior domestic alternative.
By enabling localized production, the company is directly driving India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) and ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) visions. Domestic engineering and energy sectors stand to benefit significantly from enhanced supply chain security, drastically shorter lead times, and reduced project costs, ultimately bolstering India’s industrial competitiveness on the global stage.
Engineering Excellence at Hazira:
The specialized pipes were fabricated using advanced Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) technology at AM/NS India’s flagship manufacturing plant in Hazira, Gujarat.
Producing welded pipes of this caliber is an immense technical challenge. It requires maintaining completely uniform strength and mechanical toughness across both the base steel plate and the welded seam under extreme oceanic pressures. Leveraging the combined research and development prowess of its parent giants, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, AM/NS India successfully mastered the process.
Technical Specifications of EQ70 Steel:
Yield Strength: Minimum of 690 Megapascals (MPa).
Composition: High-strength, low-alloy steel with exceptional low-temperature toughness.
Design Advantage: High structural strength allows for thinner, lighter pipes, significantly reducing overall structural weight without sacrificing safety.
Proven Real-World Application:
This milestone is not merely a laboratory success. AM/NS India has already manufactured and supplied a substantial volume of these welded pipes to a leading domestic oil and gas producer, proving its immediate commercial viability and capacity to scale.
Aligned with its corporate mission, “Smarter Steels, Brighter Futures,” this breakthrough positions AM/NS India at the absolute forefront of metallurgical innovation, proving that welded pipe alternatives can match or exceed the performance of traditional seamless steel in the world’s most demanding engineering environments.
