From a Godavari Village to OpenAI: The Journey of Telugu Engineer Uday Rudraraju
— By Surya Prakash Josyula
A small village in the Godavari region may not be known to the world. Yet, a dream that began in one house in that village has now become part of the technology behind ChatGPT, used by millions of people every day. The man behind this inspiring journey is Uday Rudraraju, a Telugu engineer trusted by billionaire Elon Musk and now working in a key role at OpenAI.
Today, the world’s biggest technology race is in Artificial Intelligence. On one side is OpenAI with ChatGPT, and on the other is Elon Musk’s xAI with Grok. Winning this race is not only about building smarter AI models but also about creating the powerful computing infrastructure that allows these models to run efficiently. Uday Rudraraju has earned recognition in this highly important field, and his recent move from xAI to OpenAI has drawn attention across the global technology industry.
Uday Rudraraju’s family has its roots in Mahadevapatnam village in Undi Mandal of Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district. Although his family belongs to the Godavari region, he grew up and completed his education in Hyderabad. From a young age, he showed a deep interest in computers, and that passion eventually led him to pursue a career in Computer Science.
He completed his Computer Science Engineering degree from the Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT) in Hyderabad. Even while studying, he gained valuable technical experience through internships at leading technology companies. He later moved to the United States and earned a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, marking the beginning of his journey in the global technology industry.
Uday started his professional career at eBay, where he worked on large-scale software systems and cloud infrastructure. His technical skills quickly earned him recognition within the company. He later joined the fintech company Robinhood, where he led a team of hundreds of engineers and worked on improving the speed, stability, and reliability of a platform used by millions of customers. This experience became one of the biggest milestones in his career.
In 2024, Uday joined xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company. It was not just another career move but an opportunity to become part of one of the world’s most respected AI engineering teams. At xAI, he played a key role in building Colossus, one of the world’s most powerful AI supercomputers. He also worked on the computing infrastructure used to train AI models such as Grok, contributing to one of the most advanced AI projects in the industry.
His achievements at xAI soon attracted the attention of OpenAI. Today, Uday Rudraraju is working in a key role on the computing infrastructure that supports future AI models at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. At a time when the world’s leading AI companies are competing to hire the best engineering talent, the fact that both xAI and OpenAI have trusted a Telugu engineer speaks volumes about his technical expertise.
Despite reaching the global technology stage, Uday has remained connected to his roots. He continues to support his native village, Mahadevapatnam, by contributing to the development of local schools and helping improve educational facilities for students. His success has not changed his connection with the place where his family’s journey began.
Uday Rudraraju’s journey from Mahadevapatnam to Hyderabad, from Hyderabad to the United States, and finally to one of the most important positions in the global AI industry is more than just a personal success story. It is a reminder that world-changing technology is not built only by people from Silicon Valley. Sometimes, the talent behind it can also come from a small village in the Godavari region.
