“Medanta”: The Most Trusted Hospital for VIPs… Here is the List of Dignitaries Treated So Far

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who undertook a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, has been discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Almost all prominent personalities prefer to receive medical services at Medanta. It was established in 2009 by cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan on a 43-acre campus in Gurugram with over 1,250 beds. In 2026, it was ranked as India’s No. 1 hospital and featured in Newsweek’s list of the World’s Best Hospitals for seven consecutive years.

Since then, medical services have been well available in regions like Indore, Ranchi, Lucknow, and Patna as well. However, people from those areas and VIPs alike still prefer Medanta. It remains the top choice for VIPs, and many dignitaries have received medical care here over the years.

1. Anna Hazare

Before social activist Sonam Wangchuk, social activist Anna Hazare was treated here during the Lokpal Bill agitation. In December 2011, amid his anti-corruption campaign demanding a stronger Jan Lokpal Bill, Hazare was rushed to the hospital with symptoms of acidity and placed in intensive care.

2. Mulayam Singh Yadav

Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav was treated at Medanta Hospital during his final days. He was admitted to the hospital multiple times due to stomach and kidney-related issues. On one occasion, he had to be readmitted just a day after being discharged. During his hospital stay, his son and SP president Akhilesh Yadav, along with his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav, visited him.

3. Amit Shah

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also admitted to Medanta Hospital. After being under medical observation for about a week, he tested negative and recovered in home isolation.

4. Dharmendra Pradhan

Former Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also tested positive for coronavirus during the pandemic. Consequently, he was admitted to Medanta Hospital in August 2020.

5. Sonia Gandhi

Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has also received treatment at Medanta. In May of this year, she was admitted to Medanta Hospital for routine health check-ups after doctors suspected a potential urinary tract infection. Her son, Rahul Gandhi, canceled his pre-scheduled rally in Kerala to be by her side.

As Medanta expanded its services beyond Gurugram, several other prominent patients visited its regional centers. In Lucknow, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, head of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, was admitted twice—first in April 2022 with a urinary tract infection, and later in September 2024 in critical condition due to urinary and digestive issues. BJP MLA and former UP minister Ashutosh Tandon also underwent prolonged treatment at the Lucknow center before passing away there in November 2023.
