Destination Weddings to Make Up 30-32% of Indian Weddings by 2028: Report

The landscape of Indian weddings is undergoing a rapid transformation. Shying away from massive guest lists and ostentatious traditional ceremonies, modern couples are increasingly pivoting toward destination weddings to curate intimate, memorable experiences with close family and friends.

According to the newly released ‘Destination Wedding Report 2026’ by WedMeGood, destination weddings currently account for nearly one-fourth of all weddings across the country. Driven by this shifting preference, this share is projected to grow significantly, reaching between 30% and 32% by the year 2028.

Rising Budgets and Extended Celebrations
As couples prioritize quality over quantity, the financial and logistical dynamics of weddings are also changing. Currently, 42% of couples explicitly prefer smaller, more intimate gatherings over grand, large-scale events.

Domestic Budgets: The average budget for a domestic destination wedding has increased by 8% over the past year, now standing at approximately ₹58 lakh.
International Budgets: For couples opting to tie the knot overseas, the average expenditure crosses the ₹1.5 crore mark.
Event Duration: Accommodating extended festivities, the average length of a destination wedding has expanded from 1.8 days (pre-2020) to 3.2 days.

A Focus on Experiential Luxury
The report highlights that Indian couples are placing a premium on highly personalized experiences, luxury travel, and unique celebrations. There is a growing emphasis on curating specialized culinary menus for guests and incorporating wellness activities into the wedding itinerary. Looking ahead, the demand for hosting these luxurious destination weddings in various Asian countries is expected to surge even further in the coming years.
