AIA Welcomes Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan & Honors Deputy Consul General Rakesh Adlakha at Bay Area Community Gathering

An Evening of Community, Connection, Gratitude and Youth Engagement

The Association of Indo Americans (AIA) hosted a special community gathering on September 16 in Milpitas, bringing together around 300 Indian-American community leaders, elected officials, nonprofit organizations, faith leaders, youth, and community members to welcome Hon’ble Satish Kumar Sivan, Consul General of India, San Francisco, as he begins his tenure, while also honoring and bidding a heartfelt farewell to Hon’ble Deputy Consul General Rakesh Adlakha as he concludes his diplomatic service.

The evening featured two meaningful engagements held back-to-back: an exclusive interactive session between Consul General Sivan and middle and high school youth, followed by a large community interaction with leaders and members from across the Bay Area.

Consul General Sivan Connects with Bay Area Youth

The evening began with an exclusive youth interaction, providing middle school, high school, and college students with an opportunity to engage directly with Consul General Sivan in an open and candid conversation.

The discussion touched on Indian and American cultures, identity, traditions, diversity, and the opportunities and challenges young Indian Americans experience while growing up between two cultures. The Consul General encouraged the youth to embrace the best of both cultures, understand differences and gaps, and find meaningful ways to preserve and celebrate their Indian heritage while fully participating in the diverse American society around them.

Consul General Sivan also shared insights into the role of the Consulate General of India, San Francisco, and how it can support young people, strengthen connections with the community, and help bridge gaps between the younger generation and India.

The students appreciated the opportunity to openly share their perspectives, ask questions, and receive encouragement from the Consul General. The interaction provided valuable insights that the youth can carry not only into their homes and communities, but also into their schools, higher education, careers, and future leadership roles.

A Grand Welcome to Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan

Following the youth interaction, the evening transitioned into a large community gathering featuring Indian-American community leaders, elected officials, nonprofit organizations, faith leaders, and community members from across the Bay Area.

A grand Chenda Melam traditional percussion welcome added a vibrant and celebratory spirit to the occasion as Consul General Sivan arrived at the gathering. The warm reception reflected the community’s enthusiasm in welcoming him to the San Francisco jurisdiction.

Among the elected officials and civic leaders who attended and joined the community in welcoming the Consul General and expressing their appreciation to Deputy Consul General Rakesh Adlakha were:

Their participation underscored the strong relationships between the Indian-American community and local civic leadership throughout the Bay Area.

The gathering also brought together community leaders representing numerous Indian-American organizations and communities, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the Bay Area’s Indian diaspora.

Interfaith Blessings and Community Unity

Adding a special spiritual and interfaith dimension to the evening, priests representing different local temples attended the gathering and offered their blessings to both Consul General Sivan and Deputy Consul General Adlakha. A local church priest (Father) was also among the distinguished attendees and offered his blessings to both dignitaries.

The participation of religious leaders from different faith traditions reflected the unity, inclusiveness, and diversity of the Bay Area community, while highlighting the shared values of goodwill, service, respect, and togetherness. Their presence and blessings added a meaningful and memorable dimension to the evening and symbolized the collective good wishes of the broader community for both diplomatic leaders.

A Warm Welcome to Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan

The gathering provided an opportunity for community members and leaders to warmly welcome Consul General Sivan and share perspectives on the evolving needs and aspirations of the Indian-American community.

One of the most appreciated aspects of the evening was Consul General Sivan’s personal interaction with community members. He took time to meet and speak with individual participants, listen to their perspectives, and engage personally with people throughout the gathering.

His simplicity and humility particularly resonated with attendees. When his personal efforts and engagement were appreciated, the Consul General humbly remarked, “It is my job.” His words reflected his deep sense of responsibility toward his role and his commitment to serving and supporting the community.

His approachable nature, genuine engagement, and willingness to connect personally with community members made a lasting impression and earned widespread appreciation, respect, and affection from those in attendance.

Heartfelt Farewell and Tribute to Deputy Consul General Rakesh Adlakha

The gathering also included a special farewell and tribute to Hon’ble Deputy Consul General Rakesh Adlakha, as he prepares to retire from diplomatic service.

Community leaders, elected officials, faith leaders, and community members expressed their heartfelt appreciation for his dedicated and valuable service to the Indian diaspora over the years, particularly his contributions to the Indian-American community across the San Francisco jurisdiction.

Deputy Consul General Adlakha has been a valued and respected presence within the community, and his support and engagement over the years have been deeply appreciated by AIA and the many organizations and community leaders who had the opportunity to work with him.

The farewell provided an opportunity for the community to collectively express its gratitude for his service, commitment, and support, while wishing him happiness, fulfillment, and continued success in the next chapter of his life.

Reflecting on the evening, the Association of Indo Americans expressed its sincere gratitude to both diplomatic leaders, elected officials, community leaders, faith leaders, and all participants for making the gathering a memorable occasion.
