Massive Change in How People Listen to Stories
Audio Storytelling: Pocket FM, an audio storytelling app, is growing fast — and it’s doing it in a way that’s different from most streaming services.
Instead of just charging Pocket FM lets users listen for free and then pay small amounts to unlock the next episode of a story they’re hooked on. This model is called “microtransactions,” and it’s working surprisingly well.
Listners typically start free, get addicted to a serialized story, and keep coming back. Pocket FM is best understood as a microtransaction-led audio storytelling business rather than a pure subscription model.
Pocket FM doubled its annualized revenue to over $400 million in the past year. The platform now serves over 250 million listeners worldwide, with a library of more than 100,000 audio series written by over 300,000 creators.
AI is also playing a big role. The company uses artificial intelligence for content creation and making faster business decisions.
Pocket FM competes for the same time as YouTube and Spotify, but Gangwar believes audio stories keep users engaged longer than most other formats — making it a quiet giant in the entertainment world.
