BSNL Unveils Commercial Satellite Phone Pricing at ₹1.34 Lakh to Take On Global Satcom Giants
A high-stakes battle is brewing in India’s satellite communication (satcom) sector. As global and domestic giants like Elon Musk’s Starlink, Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Space Fiber, and Airtel’s OneWeb accelerate their efforts to launch commercial satellite internet services, state-owned telecom operator BSNL has deployed a distinct counter-strategy. The public sector undertaking has officially announced the commercial pricing and tariff plans for its Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS), a network infrastructure it has maintained since 2018.
BSNL has fixed the price of the standalone satellite phone handset at ₹1,34,166 (inclusive of all applicable taxes). The telecom operator stated that the service is highly customized to meet the operational demands of defense forces, maritime shipping lines, disaster relief agencies, mining conglomerates, enterprises operating in remote regions, and the booming adventure tourism sector.
Capitalizing on the Surge in Adventure Tourism
The launch comes at a time when India is witnessing an unprecedented spike in off-grid travel. The number of trekkers exploring isolated terrains in Ladakh, the Himalayas, and the North-East, alongside off-road riders traveling through extreme topographies, has grown exponentially.
BSNL is explicitly targeting corporate groups, maritime agencies, and deep-wilderness travelers who operate out of dense forests, high-altitude mountain chains, and deep-sea routes where traditional cellular networks are entirely non-existent. Telecom experts emphasize that at an all-inclusive price point of ₹1.34 lakh, these handsets serve as critical, life-saving communication links during massive natural disasters when traditional terrestrial grids collapse entirely.

Strict Regulatory Hurdles for Commercial Buyers
While Indian law technically permits ordinary private citizens to acquire and own a BSNL satellite phone, practical retail acquisition is highly restricted. Unlike standard commercial smartphones, these devices cannot be purchased off-the-shelf.
In strict compliance with national security guidelines laid down by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), prospective buyers must clear an exhaustive vetting process. Beyond standard biometric KYC validation, applicants are legally mandated to formally declare the exact geographical areas of operation, the intended duration of usage, and the precise underlying purpose of the connection before BSNL is authorized to activate the satellite node.
