Bharti Airtel Outpaces Reliance Jio in May Wireless User Additions; Adds 2.93 Million Subscribers
The competitive landscape within the Indian telecommunications sector is heating up as top network providers fight for subscriber dominance. According to the latest performance metrics released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel emerged as the frontrunner in wireless growth for the month of May, securing a significant lead in new user acquisitions. Bharti Airtel successfully added a net total of 29.3 lakh (2.93 million) new wireless subscribers to its network during the month. Reliance Jio followed closely in the second spot, capturing 21.6 lakh (2.16 million) new connections.
Market Share Fragmentation and Vi’s Minor Recovery
The overall Indian wireless market demonstrated robust expansion, with the total mobile user base climbing from 133.7 crore to 134.3 crore, registering a net industry gain of 55.6 lakh (5.56 million) new connections in May alone.
Concurrently, Vodafone Idea (Vi) managed a slight operational recovery by adding a modest 1.21 lakh (121,000) users. However, market analysts point out that Vi’s marginal growth was heavily driven by low-revenue enterprise segments and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) connectivity rather than a surge in high-value, mainstream consumer sign-ups.
Following these latest network additions, the total wireless market share splits across the private telecom space stand as follows:
Telecom Operator Total Wireless Market Share
Reliance Jio 39.27%
Bharti Airtel 37.89%
Vodafone Idea (Vi) 15.56%
Active User Quality Remains Key Battleground
While Reliance Jio maintains the absolute crown regarding total volume of SIM card registrations, Bharti Airtel continues to dominate when evaluating the quality of its user base.
Airtel maintained its industry-leading position by reporting an active user ratio—the percentage of subscribers regularly using their connections—of over 99%. Jio also posted healthy active subscriber metrics, demonstrating that the real competition has shifted beyond simple user additions to securing network quality, customer retention, and high-value data users in crucial growth segments.
