Vedanta Power Revives Defunct RO Plants, Securing Safe Drinking Water for 1,000+ Nellore Residents
ANDHRA PRADESH : In a major boost to rural infrastructure and community well-being, Vedanta Power Meenakshi Energy Limited has successfully restored and renovated defunct Reverse Osmosis (RO) drinking water plants in the Nellore district. The timely intervention directly benefits over 1,000 residents across the twin villages of Lingavaram and Varagalli.
Each of the restored RO facilities will now secure daily access to clean, safe drinking water for nearly 100 households per village. Executed under the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) umbrella, this project directly addresses a long-standing grievance: both water plants had been completely non-operational for over a year, severely disrupting the local community’s access to reliable drinking water.
Overcoming Daily Hardships:
Prior to the intervention by Meenakshi Energy, local villagers were forced to source water from distant and unreliable locations. This daily struggle caused immense inconvenience, disproportionately affecting women and elderly residents. Recognizing the critical urgency of the situation, the company stepped in to execute a thorough refurbishment aimed at long-term operational reliability.
The extensive renovation process involved:
- Component Overhaul: Replacing worn-out filters, membranes, and pumps.
- Structural Upgrades: Executing critical civil repairs to the plant structures.
- Automation: Installing automated systems to maximize operational efficiency and maintain strict water quality standards.
Following successful testing, the upgraded facilities were formally handed over to the respective local Panchayat administrations for day-to-day operations and continued community maintenance.
“Access to safe drinking water is fundamental to community well-being,” said Rajinder Singh Ahuja, CEO of Vedanta Power. “Through initiatives such as these, we aim to strengthen essential rural infrastructure and improve quality of life across our operational areas. We remain committed to driving meaningful and sustainable CSR interventions spanning water, health, education, and community development.”
Community Handover and Praise:
Panchayat representatives expressed deep appreciation for the company’s swift response, noting that the functional plants will drastically minimize the challenges villagers face in securing safe water. The local administrative bodies have pledged their full commitment to the regular upkeep and uninterrupted operation of the facilities.
Inaugurating the plants, K Binu Raphael, Acting CEO at Meenakshi Energy Limited, reiterated that the company remains deeply focused on advancing water accessibility and robust infrastructure through inclusive, sustainable grassroots initiatives.
A Broader Commitment to Rural Infrastructure:
The revival of the RO plants is part of Meenakshi Energy’s broader, need-based CSR roadmap for the region. The 1000 MW thermal power plant operator also recently installed 35 solar streetlights across the villages of Thamminapatnam, Momidi, Lingavaram, and Varagalli. This clean-energy infrastructure boost has enhanced nighttime visibility and public safety for over 2,000 residents, particularly aiding vulnerable tribal households along key roads and interior habitations.
Through these targeted, inclusive efforts, Vedanta Power’s Meenakshi Energy Limited continues to foster long-term, sustainable development where it matters most.
