Securing the Sikh Vote, Attracting Hindu Voters: Congress’s New Game in Punjab
The Congress party has resolved to recapture its lost ground in Punjab. Currently, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is in power there. Historically, Punjab has been a Congress stronghold; the party had previously formed the government under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh. However, after Amarinder Singh jumped ship to the BJP and several key leaders deserted the party, Congress weakened significantly. Now, it is looking to script a comeback.
In this context, the party high command is seriously considering a complete overhaul of the state leadership. As part of this exercise, Rahul Gandhi held one-on-one meetings with five top leaders from Punjab. Meanwhile, the BJP is also strategizing to establish its foothold in Punjab this time, while AAP is determined to retain power. Against this backdrop, questions are being raised about whether a Congress resurgence is actually possible.
To counter these challenges, the Congress high command has decided on a total revamp of the state-level leadership. A committee was constituted to assess the political landscape in the state and to decide who should be entrusted with the Punjab Congress leadership for the upcoming assembly elections. This committee has submitted its report to the party. Following this, Rahul Gandhi met with the five main contenders individually. Rahul’s team is now brainstorming on who should be appointed as the state chief. Initially, Rahul Gandhi and key leaders held crucial discussions with Mallikarjun Kharge, followed by meetings with Ajay Maken and Meenakshi Natarajan.
Rahul Gandhi is currently holding consultations with former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Pratap Singh Bajwa, MLA with a farming background Vijay Inder Singla, Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh, and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. By retaining its traditional Sikh vote bank while simultaneously wooing Hindu voters, the Congress party aims to snatch power back from the Aam Aadmi Party and pose a formidable challenge to the BJP.
